    Tom's New Coop

As most of you know, laying hens are pretty simple critters. It doesn’t take a whole lot for them to thrive. Enough food and water. A safe place to roost and lay eggs. Add in enough calcium and light to keep them in a laying frame of mind and you can usually have success. As has been well...

    The duckling club

My little ones hatched out August 20. I moved them outdoors after about a month. Reason? They out grew the dog crate I was using as a brooder. Now at almost eight weeks my biggest concern is keeping them isolated from my adolescent drakes who seem to want to mate with anything that's got a bill...

    The duckling club

Not sure how Gertrude would go over in my house considering that was my mother in Laws name.:rolleyes:

    The duckling club

Okay, here's the crew at one week. The black ones are frodo and Sam. The yellow is bilbo (for his unusual bill color which seems to change daily) and the gray is Gandalf. I may have to rename Gandalf as I suspect he is actually a she.

    The duckling club

Okay, the other half of the saga. Back in April I received my order of welsh harlequin ducklings from Holderreads. Eleven peepers, all heathy and happy. Just one teensie problem.... As they grew it became painfully obvious that eight of them were males! Eight males to three females is an...

    The duckling club

Okay, my experience involves, three broody hens and eight fertile duck eggs. Didn't know whether chickens could hatch ducks but the evidence would indicate they can! Eight eggs. Six proved viable. Rats got two. I got home in time to see the rest pip and hatch. Put them in a brooder (to protect...

    duck pond filtration

I too have been trying to construct a pond filter. So far a gravity siphon to a lower sump is working to remove many of the solids but my attempts at a bio filter have been unsuccessful. Most youtube videos on bio filters for Koi ponds say you have to "prime it" with beneficial bacteria (to help...

    Elderberries safe for chickens?

Interesting thread. I had the same questions as I had planted some blue elderberries this year. Check out this site: Turns out, everyone like blue elderberries! http://plants.usda.gov/plantguide/pdf/cs_sanic5.pdf

    Fishy Eggs

Someone on the other thread also noted that the fishy egg syndrome could be seasonal. I noted that in my case the chicken responsible was molting. when they molt I understand their bodies need protein to replace the feathers. Since canola meal was one of the main sources of protein in the feed I...

    Egg Laying - Christmas Lights

I've had great success using the famous youtube trick of putting a forty watt bulb inside a cinder block and placing the metal waterer on top. Solves the frozen water problem adds a few BTUs to keep them comfy and gives them enough light to keep laying all in one go. Win, win, win.

    Fishy Eggs

Had a similar problem recently. It occurred right after I changed feeds. I read another thread on this site with links to several studies indicating that certain brown egg laying breeds (like Rhode Island reds) sometimes have a "defective" gene that prevents them from being able to metabolize...

    Eggs with fishy taste!

Calgary Farmer Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure mine was a result of changing feeds to one with canola meal. Switched back to my original local organic feed and haven't noticed a single fishy egg since. Two more questions: 1 Pretty sure the chicken that laid the fishy eggs was the one in...

    Eggs with fishy taste!

Wow, So many good replies to this thread. Thanks all. Still, I have some questions. Like many here, I changed my feed to one with canola meal (in my defense it was half the cost of the organic I'd been feeding) and my rhode island's started laying fishy eggs. (The cokoos seem unaffected.)...
