    Chicken hemorrhoids?

My husband says one of our chickens isn't doing so well. This is going to sound awful, but he says it looks like her butt has exploded. Looks kinda like her whole back end is a hemorrhoid??? I don't even know how or what to search for this issue. She's not acting sick but her back side doesn't...

Comment by 'VinDeb' in article 'Egg Float Test—Easy Steps to Tell A Good Egg From A Bad Egg'

Been using the float test for a while and has been mostly successful. One observation I have - I recently tested about 4 eggs to cook for breakfast, while they didn't float to the top of the cup, when placed in the water they turned pointed end down in the water. The 3 of yolks broke way to...

Official BYC Poll: Do You Clip Your Chickens' Wings?

Yes, if we don't they will get into the garden and eat every plant and seed. They are out of the coop all day in their yard and locked up safe at night. Aren't most predators night creatures?

    Bullying???

Problem resolved. I believe she was molting, but all is good now and is back with her sisters.

    Bullying???

I wondered about that as well, but I thought I read Golden Comets don't molt their first season, they're about 8 months old & the fact that she is giving the other 4 a very wide berth, unless that is what they do when they molt. She's the only one acting this way and they are all the same age.

    Bullying???

Our 5 layers-Golden Comets- have been getting a long fine since they were hatchlings in April 2020. Today, one is staying away from the others and a good number of feathers are gone from around her neck. We've not seen the bullying, but does it seem to be the most likely scenario? We don't know...

    Coop up or down?

Well we've got some of it right! We made the classic mistake of getting the chicks before having the coop finished. A neighbor gave us a partially built coop, which we added a run to. But the hubs never completed the sleeping area, I'm not sure if they sleep on the ground or the daytime roosts...

    Coop up or down?

My girls are layers. Thanks so much for the replies. Most of the coop/roost/run designs I have seen do have the "sleeping area" (roost??) up off the ground and with doors to close and ventilation. So I wasn't sure what he had been watching or where those coops are or if they were layers or meat...

    Coop up or down?

I see some folks use a chicken tractor and have their chickens down on the ground with a large run. I see so many coop designs where chickens are up high in a coop. My husband said he heard a chicken keeper say chickens like hunkering down on the ground. But I've never heard this. So what makes...

Getting Eggs! Egg Yolk Color question

My sweet girls are starting to lay, so far we have gotten about an egg per day. They are April babies, August was about when I was expecting to get eggs, so they are right on time. I think it's the same chicken laying though. The eggs are on the small side, but today we got a large egg. Do they...

Devastated... Lost 7 of 13 chicks last night.

My first batch of chickens, which we purchased from Tractor Supply. As they grew it became more apparent 3 of the 5 were a little older than the smaller 2. Maybe only by a week or so, but they get along, I'm sure if you got a new batch they would be okay with what's left of your current flock...

    Homesteading Career

For full disclosure: I am not a homesteader, have no desire to homestead at this point in my life. I garden, just got a few chicks, I sew, can, bake, make jewelry and bags. I watch a lot of YouTube and know there are as many rewards as there are difficulties in homesteading. But I do feel it is...
