I have recently had this very same thing happen to one of my birds - isolates herself, lays egg in the yard late in the day, almost time to roost. This same bird, about two weeks ago, was acting very strangely...non-responsive, very still, falling asleep on her feet away from the rest of the...
I thought it might be mites, so I completely cleaned out the coop with vinegar and dusted the birds and the coop with Sevin. Repeated the dusting a week later, and another week later....I don't think it's any better! I can't tell if they are pecking each other or if it's pests! This has been...
Thanks...that's what I was thinking...a feather picker! They are all still nice and red (combs and wattles). No lights. They are still getting out of the coop, just not every day. We've had some predator issues. I've provided then a block of seed to help, but I guess that's not enough! I hope it...
I've been assuming my girls' "bald spots" are from one of the other hens...what do you think? They are about 9 months old and we have NOT seen a drop in egg production...usually get 7 or 8 eggs from 8 hens.
This bantam RIR has a lot of feathers around her tail missing. She was the second hen to...

4/8 yesterday...3/8 today...
Have one little red hen (banty RIR) that has only laid 2 eggs. She laid the first about 2 weeks ago then another a few days later, and nothing since. Wish she'd get with the program! Had 2 nesting boxes for 8 hens. They take all of the straw out of one of the boxes...
4/8...One of the hens has suddenly decided to lay on the floor of the coop. They were all using the same nesting box, but maybe it's gotten too crowded!...Too bad they won't use the other one!!!
Also had a similar experience. Adopted a friend's 20 week old RSL - same age as 3 of mine, but much smaller. She was about the size of my other hens, and larger than the two smallest. Tried to integrate too soon and had to fix her up a small penned area of the coop. That lasted about a week and...
We didn't miss one, but I think we have two new layers!! Both of them seem pretty sporadic, but we've spotted them both in the nesting box! So maybe...mystery solved!
