Well...it got down to -18 last night here in South Dakota. Chickens were ready to get out in the run right away this morning...they seemed perfectly fine after a cold night with no supplemental heat!

Be careful with DE...it will prohibit the proper microorganisms from growing, which will in turn prohibit the DLM from turning into compost. I am a fan of DE, but not in your coop if you are using the DLM.
DE prohibits the growth of the proper microorganisms to turn your poo into compost! DO NOT use DE in your deep litter method if you want composting to happen.
