As long as it works for you that's all that matters , my set up works perfectly and I just leave the base there year round. I just unplug it during spring - fall....

Yeah that wouldn't work for me in the winter obviously , what I use works perfect and I never had any problems plus with the heated base the water never freezes....

    I hate my new waterer

PS the cap just screws on a false threaded nub at the top which basically just keeps it from getting lost when you're not filling it , sorry I couldn't show you the other side. If you have a tractor supply near you check it out....

    I hate my new waterer

No it actually has a cap that's threaded towards the top of the waterer and you just unscrew it and screw it to the spout at the bottom where the water comes out. Once you do that just unscrew the lid and fill it up , it's also convenient with the built-in handle to carry it. I have a hose...

    I hate my new waterer

These used to be under $30 when I got mine almost 10 years ago , I think they were around $25 , I bought a couple and they work excellent. There's an O ring under the lid and it keeps it sealed tight. Plus you can find the rings at Lowe's or Depot if it gets worn out. But I had mine for years...

I bought a plastic 5 gallon waterer from tractor supply and it fits perfectly on the base , you don't have to turn it over. You just...

Lessons learned in my battle with mites

I use several scoops because I mix large quantity's of bird seed, unsalted peanuts, raisins and rolled oats in 5 gallon buckets so I like to put about 2-3 cups at least so everything gets coated with the powered pepper, but I've also given them fresh hot peppers chopped up from my garden in summer.

Lessons learned in my battle with mites

Hi I mixed it with water I don't remember exact amount but it tells you on the bottle. I sprayed it on them lightly on there entire body except the head then lifted there wings and sprayed that area, some of the spots around neck and shoulders I worked in with my hands.
