    Anatolian shepherd dogs

Does anyone keep Anatolians and flock protectors? I have a friend with five pups (out of a litter of twelve) from wonderful working parents and I am considering buying a couple of them. The price is right and they have been raised well, so it is hard to resist.

    Cremation or Burial?

I've signed on for organ donation followed by body donation to the medical school at our closest university. I spent many hours in cadaver studies as a massage therapist in-training and began to consider going that route, then really made my decision when I discovered that my 96 year-old...

Bag out of Layena package (updated w tutorial)

Great idea and cute bags! This might be a good way for my daughter and myself to learn to use our inherited sewing machines... I certainly have plenty of these bags in the barn.

    Sciatica pain....

Pressure on the sciatic nerve can be caused by different things, such as compression around the spine (muscle, bone, slipped disc) or other muscle compression along the length of the nerve. Often the problem is caused by a tiny butt muscle called "piriformis". Piriformis is commonly strained...

Hand made chicken purses for sale

Too cute! I may just NEED one. Ninny, sorry to go off topic, but I found the CUTEST stuffed chicken pattern through a blog called "ikat bag" ... at least I think that is what it is called. I will go confirm that and edit this post if I am wrong. Anyone who sews and loves chickens would go...

    Predatory squirrels???

Squirrels routinely raid birds' nests for eggs and young birds, so your chickens' attacks are well justified!

    Anyone know this plant?

It IS a variety of dogwood, although I can't tell you the exact variety from just these photos. Often the red-twig types do not thrive in hot and humid climates, they usually look a bit thin as far as the foliage is concerned.

Snake in my pond ~ how to remove?

We had several Nothern water snakes in our ponds at my office a few years ago. Our clients were not so thrilled and the snakes did a real number on our goldfish population. I called a friend who also happens to be a park naturalist in our area. She suggested that we walk the perimeter of the...

feeding different age chickens in the same coop

I have several ages in one big coop right now as well. I use a "free-choice" approach that is often suggested, that is, I always have a "flock raiser" type crumble available for everyone (non-medicated), a seperate feeder full of oyster shell, and I routinely give them a bit of scratch in yet...

    My hawk experiment: finger's crossed.

Yes, they do hunt together during mating season, but they will generally avoid another bird's territory. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future!

    My hawk experiment: finger's crossed.

As the subject line states, this is an experiment... I can not claim that this is a solution to hawk problems, but I thought that I would share my experience so far. I have chickens that free-range on pasture and within an electric net fence. The pasture in fairly open, with the exception of...

what to do..raw bloody tail on 2 wk old chick

I have applied Blu-Kote in situations like this. It is an antiseptic, but more importantly it "paints" the injured area very dark blue, hiding the damage from the other birds. It has worked well for me in the past.

Do you trust your dog around your chickens?

No, but I wouldn't rule out trusting another dog some day. We have a smooth fox terrier and a spaniel-poodle mix. Both are confirmed chicken killers with strong predatory drives, but they are INDIVIDUALS with said traits. I know people with terriers and bird dogs that are chicken-friendly...
