I am not an expert by any means I only have my experience and research.
The first chicken we lost was on a cloudy summer day at about 4 pm to a raccoon. We got that one and about 4 days later another tried right around dusk we chased him off and locked the girls up for a week and then only let...
The problem with the cover was it was outside the run and the racoons were able to get close without being seen.
I will be setting up some places for the girls to hide in the open run though, thanks for reminding me.
We do have multiple large trees around the coop and runs, I did not show that well in the pic, but they are starting to get leaves now which seems to help keep the hawks away.

ClevelendRick,
We have room if you can't find somebody close to home to take them. I don't really need them, but would take care of them. We raise for eggs, not meat and have a couple acres they can run on (when supervised). Currently adding a new run for the babies, but have a 4x6 coop and...
Hi, new member from Wellsville (South of Youngstown, west of Pittsburgh).
We have 8 girls 2-Silver laced, 1 Black Star, 3 leghorns, one sapphire Gem, 1 auracauna, 1 roo (Rhode island red and auracauna mix) in the main coop.
We have 7 barnyard mixes in the brooder that are almost 5 weeks...
Here is our current setup. I am in process of setting up the run and coop on the right for our 7 chicks which are pushing 5 weeks old now.
I am deciding if I want to start covering the 30 by 50 run area now, or just keep them in the enclosed runs. Would like to allow them to free range again...
Seems no matter what you do you have to deal with a predator attack now and then. We have lost one girl to a Raccoon and one to a hawk in the last year. Both were leghorns, both were older girls. The rooster did get the other girls rounded up and stood between the hawk and them, also had a...
I am rethinking my main coop as well. Have a 10x20 run and am in the planning stage but already have the materials to build a 4x8 slanted roof coop to the end of it. That way they still have the run to hang out in for hawk protection and a larger coop to accommodate chicken math.
