    skinning v/s plucking

They both are good options.....I like the skin left on because I spin most of mine on the bbq. I think it helps keep the bird moist.

    Bald backsides?

I have three hens just like that with no roosters....they are the bottom of the pecking order. I have a light that is on a timer, I am adding 4 hours to the day. It is not the light....you can put blue coat on, but that usually only helps when they pick a open wound. They sell fabric that will...

Newbie, lots of questions. egglayers and meatbirds

I raise meat birds as well as layers....I raised 25 cornish cross last year and plan on doing 50-75 this year. Do it seperate the cornish cross are disgusting. They eat all day and with that comes pooping all day. It makes a total mess, not to mention your birds need different diets as they mature.

Why do so many of you buy so many chicks?

I started with 6 last year and have 18 chicken now. I have 27 more coming tomorrow. I sell the eggs and just love the chickens. I am addicted to it! They pay for themselves and everyone who buys the eggs can't get enough. Most people are used to store bought and once they try fresh they are hooked.

How do you keep eagles away?

I lost a chicken to a Red tail hawk and after the others saw that go down they are wise to them and head for cover. You may loose one but that would be it, they are very good about seeing them and getting to cover whether that is the coop or some bushes. I would worry more about the fox and...

    possum in the coop!

I usually leave my chickens roam during the day and go out at dusk and close them in. Last week we had a few warm days and I noticed the chickens hadn't gone in yet so I went out and there was a possum in the nexting box rooting around. I grabbed the pitch fork and took care of it, just part of...

Nest Box Preferences? Floor vs Raised / Interior vs Exterior

I like the interior boxes I have 4 nesting boxes for 18 hens and I could get away with 2. They seem to be drawn to the boxes with eggs already laid. This summer I am building roll out boxes and will only build 2.

    Heated Waterer

I made a water heater out of a metal feed pan and a clay flower pot. I put the bulb in the insulated galv. base and put the pot over it. I then put 2 bungee cords on to hold my waterer on. We have had alot of frigid days in Michigan this winter and I have had zero freeze ups.

Notherners, do you insulate your coops?

Look into open front chicken coops. I have great sucess and get more eggs when I leave the door open on my coop. I am building a new coop and am going with a open front or Fresh air coop design.....closed confined coops with poor ventalation are more harmful than protecting against cold. They...
