Married, living in Milam, Texas on Toledo Bend Reservoir. Moved here almost 10 years ago when I retired. I like to hunt and fish, one of the reasons I retired here. We live in a small community on a lot that's a little over 1/2 acre so we have room for all our toys, fur babies and chickens!
Some might call me a survivalist, I just like to say I'm prepared for most anything!
I built (building) our house from the ground up and we are comfortable. Still have some work to do on a spare bedroom and office. Since I'm retired, I really don't have a schedule to keep to. We have our aches and pains but live life to the fullest. Between my wife and I, we have 4 children, 8 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren! We have both lost a child over the years.
If you are ever in the area, feel free to stop by and enjoy a glass of cold sweet tea!
Here's a little more on my girls and guys!
I got started about 4 years ago. My wife wanted some chickens! I had raised many different animals and birds in my younger days. I had mentioned about getting some chickens and a friend called me up one evening and told me he had some chickens for me. I went and picked up 6 birds from him and had no place to put them! That night, they stayed in a kennel. The next day, I moved em to a fenced garden and started building a run for the birds. I
m pretty handy with tools (I'm building my own house, by myself!) and I try to reuse materials from other projects.
My first run was 4' high x 4' wide x 12 foot long. I made a frame out of 2x4's and covered all the sides with standard chicken wire, including the bottom. I covered one end so they could have some shade.
Next coop was 8' wide x 12' long and 7' tall. I covered the sides with chicken wire and the roof was some recycled tin. I moved the first run up against it and added a door between the 2. I added 10 more chickens to the brood!
9update: I now have 43 birds!)
Next, I built a hutch for nest boxes and raising small birds. We started hatching some of our eggs. We added more chickens!
I saw a video about Brahma Chickens and I wanted some of those too! We have added Bantams, Easter Eggers, Frizzled Cochins, Silkys and raised several of our own from eggs.
At the present, I have 6 different coops/runs. I just sold some of the roosters as I have too many. I do live out in the country so there are no restrictions. We have 40 chickens and 2 ducks right now! Fortunately, I am able to sale enough eggs to almost break even on feed.
What started as a hobby for my wife has turned into a business that almost pays for itself.
Presently working on a common yard so that my girls can get out and stretch a little. Too many predators to let them free range! We have lost a few over the years and I lost my Brahma rooster last week to a water moccasin! We have not had any problems with other animals (Eagles, Owls, Falcons, Foxes, Racoons and Coyotes). I have 2, large outside dogs that keep those critters away but they don't bother the chickens.
I'm pretty active on Face Book so look me up or send a friend request at Bob Weldon.
