Have we stumped the chicken community? Has no one ever experienced this before?

New Chick w/ Brittle wing feathers? What does this mean?

We got some new chicks 4 days ago. One of the little girls has brittle wing feathers where they are coming in. The other two chicks her age and breed have little wing feathers where she just has shafts and a little feather fuzz. One wing is kind of sticking out too. What does this mean? We are...

Our Girls are still afraid of the dark? How long?

OMG! You all inspired me, I went out to unplug the light and lo and behold about half of our girls were asleep on the roost!!!!!! The moon is very bright tonight so I went ahead and unplugged the light. I stood there quietly for awhile to see if anyone was going to freak out and no one did!!!! I...

    Chick behavior

We had this experience with one of our girls the first time we put them outside too. Just like what you explained. We just kept putting her out when we put the other girls out for a little while and she gradually warmed up to the whole thing. Now you can't tell her from the rest. I guess these...

    Water at Night ?

Welsumer, Does the water in your auto watering system, (which is pretty slick by the way) not get extremely warm while it sits in the exposed hose? I was always under the impression that chickens need, or prefer cold water. Yes it did so my husband covered it. Now it is great again! Also, there...

    Water at Night ?

Here is a picture of our waterer that mounts on the wall. We put a roof over it so the girls can't get on it and poop. It is lifted above the ground so the shavings don't get into it either. It is called the Auto Wata waterer because it provides continuous fresh water! It is awesome and mess...

Our Girls are still afraid of the dark? How long?

Yes, our coop only has three solid walls so one whole side is open for light to come through. The rest of the walls are chicken wire. We live in Texas and it is just too hot to have an indoor coop.

    Poultry waterer's

We are using an auto waterer we found online. We first saw it on BYC. Someone had found one at Wal Mart and said they loved it. We couldn't find it at Wal Mart or any where in the area so we ordered it online for $14.99. It keeps fresh water in the bowl all the time and never needs to be...

So how come nobody said "Chickens are an Addiction"

Wow! My husband and I agree! We are hooked! We started with 10, then it went to 17. And in the past two weeks we have added 9 more! They are such a joy and a de-stresser!! We love to get our lawn chairs and just sit in the coop with the girls. Our friends thought we were nuts until they came...

Yes we do have roosts, I just didn't include that picture. Here they are.... The girls roost on them during the day but for some reason they won't get up there at night.

Our Girls are still afraid of the dark? How long?

Okay, thanks to everyone's suggestions and advice we now have a plan! Our coop is open so they are not being plunged into darkness all of a sudden so I guess they just need to learn how and when to roost. We are going to work with them and gradually take away the light. Here is a picture of our...
