Hello!
I have crested cream legbars. I have an Opal roo over Opal hens & Cream hens. BUT I also have 1/2 CCL hens in there also (they are barred as they were sired by a CCL Roo x Amercauna hen) I had 3 chicks hatch like this. (Pictures attached)
I’ve hatched many 1/2 legbars over the last...
Update :)
By day 3 she’d accepted the chicks as her own and treats them no differently. I kept the lights off and only allowed supervised time and by day 3 she was more worried about me hovering over her then she was about which chicks were which.
And as an added surprise Another of “her” eggs...
Oh your very right and I will and can raise these chicks but I will also have to take away her own also. So I’m going to try another day or so, I don’t work until Tuesday and if I can’t trust her alone with them or they are not thriving I’ll put all 7 in the brooder, or maybe her her keep her 3...
So Day 2, I have her tolerating them. They love her and are acting like her own chicks, pecking at beak, jumping on her back, responding to her noises, but I keep the lights off and go out every 1-2 hours and turn the light on, and have them all eat And drink with supervision. If she goes to nip...
Oh that would have been smart of me, I was worried about the chicks getting older and then not imprinting on her also so I thought it was too time sensitive.
I do feel awful because I can hardly blame her to not want to take chicks that are not her own BUT she a was sitting on 7 eggs...
I’m sorry I’ve been replying in a rushed way and then zooming off to chase a child or deal with a chicken lol
I’m not taking my time for a proper rely.
It was chick 1 hatched 4 days ago
Chick 2 hatched 3 days ago
Chicks 3/4/5/6 hatched 3 days ago in an incub
Chick 7 hatched 1 day ago
and...
I’m worried that’s where I’m at, she knows there’s an “intruder” and she visually checks out every chick until she starts nipping at them.
I used crayola markers and food colouring to alter the appearance of all chicks, not just her “own” so I will also try the coloured light strategy too...
Oh keeping them in ear shot is a good idea, she gets very concerned if I play a video of a chick upset. She should be open to imprinted as she just had a chick hatch today and is still sitting on her remaining 4 eggs, the chicks I got were true day olds, 3 days younger then her oldest chick...
I wondered
I wondered if I needed to put some essential oils on each chick so they smelled a like or if it was all a visual thing, seems more visual with chickens. Thank you!
Thank you SO much for replying, time is slipping and I’m concerned for the orphans. They weren’t scared of her but are definitely getting to that point now 😔 I just didn’t know if they recognize chicks by scent or visual. Thank you!
So I need to start with the fact I know I messed with nature, I know I should have left well enough alone and I know I have to deal with the consequences.
I have a broody, she’s been sitting on 7 eggs, and all from my least desirable hens. Only 2 of 7 eggs hatched (or so I thought) I’ve been...
I know mutts are hard buttttt Hoping someone who has more experience raising chicks could tell me in their experience clearer markings like this ended up being.... a hen or Roo?
sire is a CLB and hen a EE
thank you so much :)
