    Necropsy on Laying Hen

Thank you. Me too! I did think she had a lot of fat deposits. I watched Cornell's poultry necropsy on youtube before and while I was doing this and their bird definitely had less fat. We feed them a whole grain diet, 17-18% protein. Scratch at night when we lock them up. They occasionally get...

    Necropsy on Laying Hen

I know what I did doesn't really amount to anything, but I was partially curious to see if anything was obviously amiss. This hen is a year old and has never been wormed, so I figured I might see some evidence of worms, especially considering the gaping. I mean to treat them, but as of late have...

    Necropsy on Laying Hen

Found a hen dead this afternoon and somehow found the courage to perform my first necropsy. Noticed yesterday that she had been having trouble breathing, and it worsened overnight. Heavily labored breathing this morning with a stridor, either on in or exhale or both. Crop looked pretty full for...

    Laying at +-14 Weeks?

The first week of March we brought home 12 pullets of different laying breeds - Comets, Browns, Asians, EEs, and RIRs. We found two extra small eggs today, one in the coop run and one hidden close by. We have three adult hens but I really doubt these came from them. Could one/some of the sex...

Thoughts on Cause/Treatment of Curled Toes

Thanks for the input! I didnt notice any chick having issues when we first brought them home, but I guess that's possible. Apparently my bf gave them Sav-a-chick probiotic, not vitamins, so we just gave them a double dose of chick vitamins with riboflavin in their water so hopefully that helps...

Thoughts on Cause/Treatment of Curled Toes

Hey All, need some advice with a +- 3w/o chick who is having issues: We recently bought 12 chicks to add to our flock, as our older birds have gradually moved on to the pasture in the sky. 8 birds came from TSC March 7th - various breeds - and 4 americaunas came from a local feed store. We...

    Overly full crop, aspirating

Hmm. How did you get her to eat if she wasn't even interested in her treats? Did you syringe or tube feed or did she eventually gain her appetite back? I think mine might have an impaction underneath all that liquid...like maybe a mushy ball of grass etc. now that most of the liquid (though...

    Overly full crop, aspirating

Did she act sick/lethargic at all, or did he act normal except for the really full, liquidy crop? I've dealt with sour crop before but I could detect a faint sour-ish smell on the bird's breath and she ate and drank like normal, just had a minor impaction that turned into sour crop. Did what...

    Overly full crop, aspirating

Let the hens out into the yard today from their coop/run and one didn't come out right away. RIR has very full crop, had some gut gurgling noises. Immediately brought her in the house into a bin to rest and try to recover. She stood in the bin or a while, not really moving or interested in...

Poopy butt on 4 year old

https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/884172/sick-rir-weight-loss-green-runny-poop-now-fly-strike-graphic-pics/10 Couldn't remember if I had posted the pics or not - see post #12 in the above thread. I washed the area with warm water which removed a lot of them, them spent at least an hour...

Poopy butt on 4 year old

I unfortunately dealt with fly strike once when a chicken of mine had a poopy butt for too long. Next thing I know, the strike turned into a giant mass of maggots. Stomach turning. I would be happy to post a pic if you're interested but it's NSFW to be sure.

    Can chickens scare away songbirds?

Hmm. Makes sense. So if I put a tray of seeds out near the feeder, they may eventually find the feeder and use it instead? Thanks for your help!
