    Safety of creek water

Hi there, So, I just moved my coop into an area close to a creek. The creek runs through an agricultural area and may contain fertilizer or farm chemicals. Here's the thing. I have no house water to a sprinkler system or spigots anywhere near my coop, so I've been filling a 5 gallon bucket in...

Molting on back, base of tail only

Hi there I have a new flock of 8 hens, all having lost feathers or only have those soft under feathers left in the same spot and nowhere else- all on their "lower back" or base of the tail feathers. I've worked on mite control, given them extra calcium, and sprayed that stuff that's supposed to...

    Culling?

I didn't have the heart to cull my chicken (I know, it comes with the territory, and I need to toughen up.) It's my first time owning chickens and this one had scissor beak. I have only three Buff Orphs. Meet Gloria, Bernadette, and Pegg. I am building my coop this weekend, which is fully contained and will (hopefully) look something like this... ...At least for now, until I paint it white, gray, and red to match my house! Anyway, I live in the...

    Gravel in chicken run?

Thanks for the replies! I am going to remove the gravel and landscaping fabric underneath where the coop will go. Our soil here has plenty of small rocks and gravel in it, along with wormies and bugs to scratch around for. I am just not looking forward to shoveling it out of there!

Brooder lessons: My first chicken experience so far

So we just moved to rural Palisade, CO, and I decided that it was finally time to get some backyard chickens. We live right in town, so we are only allowed to have up to 6, so I decided that 3 would be good to start with, being that I am a chicken "beginner." I have learned a few lessons already...
