Henneth Fowltrow laid her first egg!

I should also add that my daughter has a picture with each hen, holding her first egg. The cuteness cannot be controlled :)

My two Australorps have black feathers that shined blue/green - so beautiful! They were both the bosses in my small flock. I had to learn how to force Leandra to vomit via Youtube once, as she had sour crop. I saved her life! The other hen Eva, age 7 is withering despite my best care. I selected...

I had two Buffs. Sarah was my biggest, fattest hen, and the one who mothered everyone - my pick for a mother until she was killed by a stray dog. My other Buff is Rebecca, my daughter's hen. She demands to be held, lays very few eggs, and is like a lap cat. VERY family and child friendly...

Henneth Fowltrow laid her first egg!

I remember every one of my girls first eggs! In fact I keep them in a jar. Congrats to you both! May she continue to make you happy with her accomplishments

Chicken not Laying for about 3 weeks?

My old ladies lay at different times of the year. The Auracanas lay like crazy right now, the Australorps don't, but will lay eggs into the winter. Also, I have a Buff Orpington who is so greedy she rarely lays eggs. Could just be the hen!

My old hen is dying - should I put her down?

I have 5 hens, age 7. My Australorp Eva is failing. She is slow moving, her comb tells me that she is not healthy, and I do not eat her to suffer. Anyone else with old ladies out there? Should I put her down? I absolutely do not want want her to suffer. We have spent hours together in the past...

I want a good layer like sexlinks but...

I have 5 hens who are closely approaching 7 years old. The Australorps were absolutely the best layers hands down. I also have Buff Orpingtons, White Brahmas, and Auracanas - all of which are people friendly and very social.

Brown's Layer Booster Daily Chicken Feed

My girls are normally all organic, as when I switched them to a local feed they stopped laying for 14 weeks. But I do use this feed as a supplement to the organic Blue Seal layer feed and they really like it. I have 8 hens and when they are well fed and happy I average 6-8 eggs a day. Without...

    Heat Wave Behavior

They are having heat stroke. Panting is their way of trying to cool down when distressed. You need to get them some shade for their run. If you have an enclosure, get a tarp up there straight away. You should also get electrolytes into their water; the same stuff you would see for baby...

Diarrhea, plucked feathers on butt and recent giant egg

One of my Australorp's has virtually no feathers on her butt today. She seems to be having diarrhea also, as the feathers she has remaining were caked with white fecal matter. I cleaned her rear with warm water and hen-safe soap this morning which she seemed to appreciate. But she is still...

Sick hen with crop that feels like silly putty

Thanks for the feedback! It helped me feel a LOT better that what I was doing was the right stuff. I managed to get Josephine's crop emptied and she is right as rain. I would imagine that Nurse Bartholomew (our kitten) may have helped since he stuck by her like glue. Culprit may be the...

Sick hen with crop that feels like silly putty

Josephine, one of my more voracious hens (Light Brahma 8 months old) suddenly is not eating and her tail is drooping. Her crop is very big and feels like it is filled with silly putty. When palpating, I can make it into crazy shapes and it will stay like that until it relaxes back on its own...
