Sorry got so excited about it I didn't answer your question. Yes the cup is empty every time just watch for them to swallow that told me they were getting water and they went back to feeding. I marked the bucket and made sure the level had dropped the next day. Good luck.
I just built one with a 3 gallon bucket and it works great. I left the girls out for about 2 hours without water, removed there water bowl (only thing they have known for water), manually filled cups with water and let them in. Took all of five minutes for them to figure out. I need to move it...
What do you think of using a "panel" heater as the baffle that way when it was heating (around 30 inside the coop ) it would heat the incoming air?
Thanks for the idea.

Hmmm now you have me going back to my old plan of leaving soffits open. I guess the idea is to keep the ventilation from hitting the girls directly witch if you go up high it would naturally fall to the bottom get warmed, rise, and exit the coop. It will be a pitched roof so it would be easy to...
Thanks for the info. I'll try to look that up so busy with all the info on BYC I don't seem to have any time. The 1sq per bird seems pretty popular.

I'm building a insulated 8x8 coop that will be air tight when I'm done so I know that I need to have ventilation for the girls in the winter but I'm confused about how much they need vs. Drafty. We are only talking winter (-10 @ worst ) in the summer it will be opened up. I am a hvac guy so...
Ok on to the coop. It will be 8x8 for 5 birds. I would love thoughts on heights of nesting boxes, perches, poop doors in a coop both for straw and compost floor.
Ok that's good news for your girls. If you're willing to give them that it be more than I had as a kid.:) Do you worry about deconstioning the birds to the heat?
Ok I think I have updated my location but if I didn't it is in Hamilton mt extreme low -10 extreme high 105 I am a heating and cooling man by trade and I want the girls to be cunfy but ready for the next day in the run. Thoughts?
