We have a proven rooster that has been breeding excellently this year. He has given 80-93% on several clutches over the last 6 months. Then 6 weeks ago he suddenly gave us 30% fertility on a clutch of 14 eggs. We didn't think much of it and continued on. But we just candled 18 eggs and none...
Here we go again, a few weeks later. I think they are about 10-12 weeks old now. The black and the blue both have a knob on their comb that the white doesn't have.
Any guesses?
I have three, I am unsure on exact ages, but they are between 6-9 weeks old. The black is the oldest, blue and white are younger. The blue wasn't happy about being a model, sorry for the blurry pics, I understand if you can't tell from those. Here they are:
We are at about 8,000 feet altitude in Colorado. We have had two very unsuccessful hatches. With one the eggs were shipped from a lower altitude, with the other the eggs were local. With both hatches my temperature, humidity, and turning were right on with what the booklet with my incubator...
This is a 7-week-old hatchery cockerel. Is there any way to know at this point if he is a Barred Rock or a Cuckoo Maran? Can anyone tell from these pics? My hatchery says CMs have grey legs and BRs have yellow legs. But I've also read that CMs have pink legs and BRs have yellow. This guy...
26 of the pullets in our order have almost non-existent combs at this point (4 weeks of age), and then there is this one BO with a huge comb that is starting to turn pink. On top of that it is chest bumping and fighting with the rest constantly. Cockerel?
Wow! Thank you all so much for all this info, it is totally new to me and I am really enjoying learning this.
Chris, I have pictures of the barred rock pullets from the hatchery, but they are only two weeks old so I am guessing showing a pic wouldn't help. Right? They do have white on top...
Here is another picture of him that shows his shape better.
I appreciate your help and am wondering how sure are you that he's mixed? The reason I am asking is because we are not interested in breeding second generation mixes. We have some purebred Barred Rock pullet chicks from a hatchery...
That is helpful, thank you!
That is my rooster in the picture. He and the hen in question were both in the same brood raised by a hen in someone's backyard. The person's only rooster was purebred Barred Rock from a hatchery and there was also a hatchery barred rock hen laying at the time as...
I am very interested in learning more about the color genetics associated with a barred rock rooster. I am new to chicken genetics, but have studied dog color genetics quite a bit.
We unexpectedly ended up with a barred rock roo. We have several breeds of hens, including RIR, Buff Orp, and...
