Thanks for your replies.
My husband and I talked about this today and we think we have a solution. We have a 12 by 16 shed on our property that currently houses garden supplies, a push mower, tiller, and pots. We hadn't thought about using that for meaties but we realized that we could put...
Thanks for your reply. Did you find that the birds used that big of a run? My current run for my 14 hens is 30 by 60 and they don't utilize half of it. I have to mow it ever two weeks as they can't keep up with the greens that grow in there.
We have raised meat birds for four years in tractors and don't want to do that any more for various reasons. We do not have a barn so raising them in a barn is out. Has anyone built a small stationary coop for meat birds with a small run? If so, I would love to see your set up and am curious...
We moved to our current home 4 years ago and brought our free range birds with us. Unfortunately, we have both hawks and eagles on our property so after losing a few of our beloved hens, we decided to re-home the birds as we were gutting a foreclosure and couldn't take the time to build a...
We bought 10 hens in March and another 3 at the beginning of May. They have been kept apart up until this point as we had a family issue come up that kept us from finishing our run and coop. They are currently residing in two chicken tractors. When we first introduced them to the tractors, my...
We are raising Freedom Rangers. The ones that look the worst, feather wise, are actually the smallest birds. They were in cramped quarters for a bit longer than we would have liked due to flooding and two family deaths that kept us from getting our tractor finished so I don't know if part of...
I don't remember this with our laying hens but we have quite a few meat birds with very sparse feathers under their wings and a few with sparse feathers on their bums and necks. Some of our birds are 4 weeks and some are 5 weeks. The lack of under wing feathers doesn't matter in regards to age...
These birds are 4-5 weeks old Freedom Rangers. We wanted to move them to their chicken tractor 1-2 weeks ago but have had two deaths in the family plus a ton of rain so we weren't able to finish the tractor and move them until tonight. When moving them, we noticed that many of them are missing...
Started our coop at the end of March but due to three weeks of severe rain, snow, sleet, and flooding and a few other set backs, we just got to finish it and the run today. Since we had access to a truck topper for $5 we decided to design our coop around it. Each window has hardware cloth...
We used to own acreage but due to a job change, moved to town, when this girlie of mine was 6 months old. We finally got back on acreage just before her eighth birthday. The country setting is perfect for my little tomboy. This photo was taken during a baby shower I was hosting. She wore a...
I just added a link to a photo of the coop when it was partially done as well as a more detailed description so you could have a better understanding of what we are working with.
My husband raised chickens as a child but this is our solo journey into it as a family. We are building a raised coop using a truck topper as a roof for our current birds and want to add more to our flock next year. The raised coop has 3.5 feet of space under it and the thought crossed our...
Thanks everyone. The 10 acres does have 6 acres of woods on it. Honestly, we are a bit befuddled of how to get started. The previous owner was very big into ornamentals so we have lots of landscaping that can't feed us, three acres of yard to mow, and about an acre of weed field. We are...
