That is the idea. We just need to get him away from the hens. DH used to work in a meat dept. He knows what to do. I just don't want to stress out the rest of the flock.
DH says that rooster has a place...on the table beside the mashed potatoes.
Thank you for the replies to this thread. I have a mean one too. He is about 6 months old and getting worse. We were keeping him because DD liked him but now she is afraid - he chases her too. I know he picks on her because she is the smallest person in the yard even when there are other...
My hen moved her babies away from the bad eggs and is taking great care of them. I probably need to move on to a chick thread now. that we have hatched. My hen is a 6 month old hatchery chick and never knew a mama so everything she is doing is instinctive. If she made some mistakes it would...
Thanks everyone! Mama hen finally left her nest and those last two unhatched eggs. She patiently waited for 2 days but had enough. Whew! She was parked beside it with her babies and made no fuss when I pulled out the nest box. The mash suggested here worked great and got them through those...
Thank you for the help. I do have bricks around the nest and pine chips piled up around it. The chicks should be able to get back to Mama from any direction.
I marked six eggs early on and kept removing the new ones. No chicks have hatched since yesterday afternoon. I don't think the others...
My hen hatched four adorable chicks and they appear to be active and well. The first hatched Tuesday afternoon. Mom is still sitting on 3 eggs in nesting box and the chicks are right beside her. We have put food & wet grass in the box which they all eagerly ate but there is no room for water...
I am a beginner myself but I did grow up around chickens at my grandparents. My TSC 6 month old White Rock hen just woke up one day and wanted to be a Momma. It has been almost 3 weeks and she is still relentless. I just moved her to a solitary suite in the doghouse where she quickly went...
Thank you much. I didn't know not to move in the last few days. I hope she gets some chicks after so much effort. So dedicated. It is really impressive.
So grateful for this thread and the posts about marking the eggs with a Sharpie. I got a quick rare glimpse of Broody's 6 eggs and quickly marked them. Next day she had 9. Grabbed the 3 new ones. Next day she had 8 & grabbed the 2 new ones. She would be sitting on an egg mountain if left...
I have some eggs from this AM on the counter. They have been in the 75 degree house since noon. Are they OK or should I wait for tomorrow's eggs? She went broody yesterday. Will she lay a few more herself?
I am so new at this. Just started getting eggs in July and now a broody hen! She sat the nest all day yesterday in 90+ degree heat and all last night. We tried to take the eggs but she fought us off. I'm not about to put my hand in there again. My sweet hen is suddenly pretty hostile. Today...
