Amazon has a pretty good deal on hardware cloth compared to Home Depot out here in N. California. I have Amazon Prime, so free 2-day shipping. http://www.amazon.com/308199B-24-Inch-50-Foot-2-Inch-Galvanized/dp/B000RZFO2W/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1306510392
Thanks Bill. I'm an old hand at canning / pickling. I don't want to make more than a quart jar worth of pickled eggs at a time. Your recipe has 7+ cups of pickling liquid and I hate to waste, even if it is just some vinegar & spices. So, if you normally get 3 quart jars out of this, I know...
Thank you everyone for elaborating.
The predator-proofing of the gap is the part that puzzles me. Fruit/roof rats are very common here in Silicon Valley (this was all orchard here until 50 years ago) and they worry me the most as they are smaller than the norwegian rat. I not only want to keep...
For coturnix quail, I love the concept of a slanted bottom where the eggs all roll forward to be collected. Assuming 1/2" hardware cloth on the bottom of the pen, how much of an angle do I need to get the eggs to roll forward and how big of a gap in front of the cage to allow the eggs to roll...
Hi there from a fellow newbie,
There's a ton of stuff written about coturnix - rearing, space requirements, etc... Between the sticky at the top of the thread and a session with the search features here, you should get answers to most of your questions.

IMHO..6inches X 6 inches per bird is too crowded they have no room to move around and get away from anyone who is picking on them and they seem to be just plain unhappy .......
IIRC, 0.5 square feet = 72 square inches, not 36. It's more like 8.5" x 8.5".
Hi,
My family and I are in the final stages of preparations for raising coturnix quail here in the heart of Silicon Valley, CA.
There's so much information here on this site.
Lurking and leraning right now.
