broody hen. want her to succeed but a couple of problems.

Thanks all, it makes sense. Pad the nest. Keep the other hens out. provide food and water during the process. but don't relocate the nest of the broody or of the others. Baby pictures soon! Thanks again.

broody hen. want her to succeed but a couple of problems.

Quote: Are you talking about big dog kennels or small? We kinda did a small set up inside the coop (dedicated garage) around her row in the nesting boxes. But with a way that she can get in an out. would it be okay to just shut off that entire bottom row with food and water for her till the...

broody hen. want her to succeed but a couple of problems.

Thanks to both of you. It helps knowing that the feather loss is normal and actuality better for the chicks to be. That was my big concern. I'll add straw and leave her in "her" box. Heck, before she went broody the whole coop was hers all the other hens just payed rent and had to ask nicely to...

broody hen. want her to succeed but a couple of problems.

Thanks. But that is the thing I can not figure out. How can I make so she can come and go, but none of the others can? The roos, ducks and turkeys have no chance of getting to that bottom row of boxes. I can isolate her. Set her up in a run with a new nest. But will she still set? and/or will...

broody hen. want her to succeed but a couple of problems.

One of our buff orphintons went broody 5 days ago. First time 28 week old hen. I have 3 concerns. 1) She seems to have moved the straw that was in the nest out too far in radius. Most of the eggs (12) are on the wood floor of the box. 2) one of the eggs was slightly broken. It contained a...

Is there a good flow chart out there?

Quote: Yup, I am noticing that too. That's why I am switching to Excell type set up. if you select the willow leg feature all the breeds you mentioned would still be in the list. Then you pick something else, like tufts, 5 toes, etc to try to limit it down more, and then you end up with some...

Is there a good flow chart out there?

Quote: I'll try it. and thaks to all for the resources. I probably do something like an excell worksheet that has filters. You can go left to right and filter on "Leg color -> Black" then "Bottom of Feet Color->Yellow" And you will end up with Jersey Giant as a potential. If you picked...

Is there a good flow chart out there?

Mrs. Glassman : I have never heard of one, but that is an interesting concept...kind of like the website I use to help me identify species of trees. If you find one, do post it!! I will do so. In either case, when I cull I'll take pictures of every bird and try to make sure my criteria were...

Is there a good flow chart out there?

Quote: It does help. But at the same time I can get kinda confused in it since there are so many color variations of each breed. I am not trying to be a pain, but I am inexperienced. Here is a specific quandry. I know I have leghorns in the mixed order. I have a couple of all white birds. I...

Is there a good flow chart out there?

I am new to chickens this year. Lurked the forum for a long while. I am simply amazed at y'alls ablity to identify breeds and sex on pictures. I am almost lost. So..... I have 70 birds left. They were shipped as a mix. I need to cull. When I search for the potential breeds I have, I can come up...

we woke up to a chicken massacre. ANy ideas?

Quote: You're right. They had dogs and guns and traps, and weren't afraid to use any of them. They also kept plenty of chickens. There's safety in numbers. Not so sure about the dogs being effective during nighttime. But the guns and traps are working swimmingly for me now. And I still have...

we woke up to a chicken massacre. ANy ideas?

You pretty much need absolute fort knox. I have learned this the hardway myself. When my dad and I discuss this, I used to say, "naw, a racoon can not climb 5 foot streached horse fence. And even if they did, they are not going to scale the coop wall 5 feet straight up through a knocked out...
