Wounds look good this morning and no maggots! Small victories!
However her wry neck is keeping her from eating. Yesterday it was less evident and she was able to look at her food and pick at it. Not so today. I am feeding her with a syringe and while she’s not crazy about it, we are slowly...
So this morning I trimmed the feathers around her vent. There was a larger deeper wound that I did not see previously, because it is to the left of her vent and she always wants to lay on that side. In addition, there are two smaller wounds. I flushed them all with peroxide as well as her vent...
Ok, I'll skip the ivermectin. Just looked at her vent and clipped away feathers. Pretty clean overall but I did see a small (1/4") wound that has some maggots (sorry, in my rush didn't take a pic, but will post one soon). The maggots were creeping toward her vent, so I've just run to the store...
Yikes! what a nightmare! Thank you everyone... I don't know what I would have done without your collective advice. It is much appreciated.
My poor sweet hen has made it through the night. Just gave her a syringe full of vitamin/electrolyte water and checked her vent. I don't see maggots, but...
Ok, this evening I decided to massage her crop to see if she could release whatever was in there. I saw a video of someone doing this. After several attempts, no luck. Maybe she didn’t really have much to get rid of afterall. I decided to clean and take a closer look at her vent and discovered...
I'm wondering if she has sour crop. When I set her upright she doesn't not like this and leans to the left. I wonder is the pressure on her crop when she is upright makes her uncomfortable. It definitely feels squishy. Her head is listing to the left as well. Any thoughts on dealing with sour crop?
I thought about giving her a warm soak to relax her and clean up her vent area, but am worried it will cause additional stress, since she doesn't like to be picked up to begin with. She can barely hold her head up and after I give her some water, she closes her eyes as if she's exhausted. Also...
She has a very messy butt, but hasn't pooped since I found her today. I wouldn't say her abdomen feels like there any swelling. Crop seems a little squishy. It's not fully empty and she doesn't like it when I palpate it. Might that be the problem? If there is a blockage, how might I fix it...
My hen is a 5 years old Australorp. I found her sitting under a bush this morning. This seemed unusual for her because she is usually robust and active. Upon picking her up, she basically collapsed and does not have the strength to sit upright or hold her head up (the bush was basically holding...
Thank you for the information. Hopefully I won't need to use it anytime soon, but it's good to know what to do in case it happens again. In the 3 1/2 years I have had my 8 girls, this is my first loss.
Hello, I just happened to find this post and am so sorry for your loss.
Something very similar happened to me this morning -- I was feeding my hens and one of them started coughing like she had something stuck in her throat. She couldn't dislodge it and kept coughing, however I thought she was...
