Thanks for the info. I knew that the US stock came from the one source from GF, but I didn't know that they didn't practice gene diversity. I also did not know that they become weak after 3 or 4 years due to that lack of diversity. However; I have to disagree that their is nothing special about...
I don't agree with broodiness being a con. To me that is a Pro. I'm not a hatchery that needs to crank out hundreds of eggs. I prefer to let nature and the hens to do the work of hatching and rearing. They do a fantastic job, and there is always other hens that are not setting that can supply...
Unfriendly or skittish rooster will pass on that trait to the chicks to both roos and hens. They are calm if you start with calm roos and hens for your breeding stock. and when you get a Roo or Hen that is twitchy or mean,,,,, it needs to be culled and not bred. If you do this, you will have and...
Glad you said the eggs are good. I don't have this breed "yet" and I have heard that eggs are good but, didn't know if that was false hype or what. so, hearing someone else confirm is good.

The deep keeled exhibition type can't fly, but the Production type Rouens do have a limited ability to fly. I have raised them. I have seen approximately 1 year old females fly high enough that they went over ever a 6ft fence several times.
I don't remember exactly. I know this is broad but it's somewhere in the 4 to 6 month range. It doesn't happen quickly either. It starts slowly and takes weeks.

Yes. I'm not sure exactly how long (its not exact), but yes, the female can store sperm for probably 2 weeks or a little more. In addition, laid eggs are fertilized long earlier in the process from a few days to a week before they are laid. With storing sperm for 2 or weeks and then a week to...
I have raised this breed. The only cons that I am aware of is that being a "blue" they will not breed true. if you breed blue to a blue, you will got only 25% blue, 50% splash and 25% black, If i remember correctly. the only way to have 100% blue duckling is the breed the black and splash then...
