OP here, and I'm not sure - maybe somebody else can answer.
As for my original question on my hen, I'm fairly certain she is a Bl Australorp crossed with a Copper Marans by her feathered feet, foot color and the very dark brown eggs she lays. She lays quite a few eggs, and also her eye color is...
I checked the color of the soles of her feet today and they are most decidedly white, not yellow. That leads me away from the Jersey Giant co-mingling and back to Australorp-Copper Marans. She's a gorgeous hen and her egg-laying ability so far is spectacular - both in color as well as size of...
From the pics at those links, she does more closely resemble a Jersey Giant (comb especially), except the feathered feet, very dark brown eggs, and the extremely big, dark eyes.
She's bigger than my Buff Orpington (who is only almost 5 1/2 months old). Here is a pic of my Buff next to my Barred Rock, who is the same exact age as my Buff. I would say my Buff is about 3/4 of the size of the black hen in question. Black hen in question has reached her full size as she is 2...
Here is another of my hens that looks an awful lot like yours, is also still small (she's the smallest in my flock) and hasn't laid an egg yet, was sold to me as an "Olive Egger" and whose daddy was a Copper Maran (as told to me by the breeder, and looks like a full-blooded Maran to me).
Cool! Was yours as big as she is? They are both HEFTY girls, and this particular miss is definitely shopping in the plus-sized department! My Cinnamon Queen (formerly the flock's biggest hen) looks like a bantam next to her!
Hey, everyone - I picked up two 2.5 year old hens about 9 days ago and the woman I got them from (who had to move and get rid of most of her flock) said they were black Australorps. My plan was to take just her 2 blue Australorps, but the one black hen was quite strikingly beautiful with her...
Ok, but apparently these blue Austras were laying before they just stopped laying recently for their previous owner. I guess that's where my confusion is. Why would they start laying at 6 months (at previous owner's house), then stop laying at 8 or 9 months (also at previous owner's house)? 3...
The two BLUE Australorps (whom I'm asking about) are not molting.
Only one of the BLACK Australorps is molting, and the other black Australorp who is NOT molting is laying an egg about every other day.
Thanks for your response.
Two things: the previous owner said they had stopped laying BEFORE I brought them home (so this isn't a new thing); and I think they're feeling pretty safe and comfortable in their new, much larger and cleaner yard with 2 coops to choose from. In fact, most of my...
Hi, Everyone - as the title states, I'd like to know why these (allegedly) 9 month old blue Australorps I just brought home from another backyard chicken owner aren't laying
I'm fairly new to having my own chickens, and I just brought home four additional hens 5 days ago from someone who needed...
