    Scissor beak?

Some additional considerations re: scissor beak -- A Belgian Quail chick born here about 2.5 weeks ago had scissor beak, and I brought it to an avian specialist vet in the hope something might be done. Sorry to say, the situation was hopeless and the little one was humanely sent to chick...

First time broody hen sitting on eggs. Nervous!

I'm no expert -- my hen Lulu has only hatched a few times -- but here's my experience. My chickens free-range during the day or hang around inside my sheep barn. They lay in the barn, and when Lulu is broody she nests in the there. I move her, along with the nest and eggs, into a large dog...

    Possible albinos?

My Buff Orpington hen hatched two chicks about a month ago. The eggs probably weren't hers but all my hens are Buffs except for one Barred Rock. The rooster is a Buff. So why are these chicks white? Is it possible they are albinos? Their eyes seem bluish, but I can't swear to that.

My pullet is dominant over my cockerel...

I've had cockerels that were dominant from the start, while others that grew into the role. My current rooster was second-to-last in the pecking order for a long time, but eventually he took charge. He didn't crow until he was nine months old or more. He's a fine rooster now, takes good care of...

    Hen with dirty butt....

Thank all of you so much for the info re: dirty butts. I've got Buff Orps and I just finished cleaning two very messy behinds. (Back when I lived in San Francisco, I never imagined I would end up doing such a thing. It's really good to know this is a common problem for Buffs. I'll keep a close...
