Help! My chickens are getting sick left and right

I would say contact your vet for sure: they will have a better idea of what to give and in what dosage. It could be MG but it could be something else so a specialist is always a good idea in those cases. If it's MG as we hypothesized then after therapy you will have to manage, but in the acute...

Help! My chickens are getting sick left and right

They had wheezing, breathing with open mouth and some of them had a swollen eye and foam at the eye, some yellow like kind of "mucus" coming from either the swollen parts or the nostrils. And the smell, as I said it's sweet but disturbing. Some of them were kind of lethargic but not all of them...

Help! My chickens are getting sick left and right

Also, if it's any consolation: my MG outbreak was in April, and after the initial toll (when I still didn't know any better), my flock is stable, healthy and even thriving so if you don't have a commercial operation set up you can try to manage it.

Help! My chickens are getting sick left and right

You can have it tested with pcr from your vet (cloaca sample required), but normally foam in the eye and the smell are the dead giveaway of MG. Good news and bad news: you can eat the eggs - MG is specific to avians, we do have different mycoplasma for humans/mammals - but it will transmit to...

Brahma hen who never laid an egg

I just saw the picture of your hens, maybe they are cross? My other brahmas are younger and they are just starting (they are about 9 months old now) so I'm ok with being "late" to lay, but two years it's a bit extreme so there has to be some condition that prevents her, I guess

Brahma hen who never laid an egg

Meet Violet, the hen who doesn't lay eggs :) I had doubted she could be a boy but she does behave fully like a hen, has no crowing no aggression no nothing, and my vet thinks it's a female as well.

Brahma hen who never laid an egg

More than a year ago I got an adult Brahma hen. She was - according to the seller - one year old. She is the most beautiful hen I have and I love her very much. She has never laid an egg, never sat on a box, ever. She's healthy, very big, gorgeous but no eggs. While it's not an issue and she's...

Help! My chickens are getting sick left and right

From what you describe I too think it might be Mycoplasma Gallisepticum (my flock is MG+). Do the eyes look foamy (bubbles)? Do their head smell funky (a sort of disturbing sweet smell)? I've had an outbreak of MG after getting new hens from another flock and unfortunately it brought a lot of...

Seven months old-ish, more boys than I thought (?)

Thanks everyone! No eggs yet, no crowing yet so I have no actual confirmation. However since the general consensus is they are an all boy squad, I will start to balance my flock, need more girls anyway.

Seven months old-ish, more boys than I thought (?)

Hello everyone, some months ago I posted my baby chickens, of which some are brahma and now they're waaaay bigger so maybe you can help me figure because I am unsure of how many are boys. The only one I'm quite sure it's the girl, it's number 4. They are beautiful and giant, and I love them, but...

How do I know if a hen is elderly?

Hi all, yesterday morning she passed, very calmly. I like to think she waited for me, when I opened in the morning she came out, I saw she was different, and then she laid on the grass and slept, and then she passed. Thank you for helping me with this, she has been happy I think, I let her be...

How do I know if a hen is elderly?

As requested, some pics of her, meet Henrietta. @Mrs. K that's exactly her, she is slower, and she seems uninterested in most of the things. She doesn't like anymore being around the flock and prefers being by herself most of the time. If she's actually just old and not sick, how can I make her...

How do I know if a hen is elderly?

Hello everyone, I hope this is the right section of the forum. Around 9-10 months ago we rescued a few chickens. They were in very poor health (their combs and around the eyes were white, they were unable to walk, their nails were quite long and curved towards their palms) and in the span of...

    Young cockerel distressing the pullets

There is indeed no adult roo in my flock; the one concerning me is Johnny who actually hurt one of them badly (she couldn't walk anymore and I had to keep her in the house for a couple of days). The others are doing fine and "sparring" with the hens, the older ones correct them quickly when they...

    Young cockerel distressing the pullets

I'm so sorry to hear that @McChooky and separation for now it's the way to go, but I meant for the future, is 2 (future) roosters ok with 16 hens or it should be 1 rooster with 16 hens?
