    Growing fodder for chickens

Hi there, I too had my doubts about this process of sprouting originally so I did a little research that was based on studies obtained by educational institutions (unbiased). Here's one of the examples that turned me around. I'm not saying that the USDA sit is wrong, I'm saying that their...

    Fodder

OK, so I was on another site and saw this amazing setup a guy used with buckets. You for a "small scale" would really benefit from this method. I found it for you. http://brinkoffreedom.net/homesteading/dead-simple-fodder-system/. I especially love the swale. As to seeds. Best to grow...

My simple laundry sink fodder growing setup.

Most seeds, to prevent a fungus are treated if they are intended to be put into the ground including organic ones (only organically). Here's the thing, seeds don't always keep well. I dried my own and left them in the pan for months. Placed them into an air tight container and voila, mold...

Crumbles are ground so these won't sprout.

    Growing fodder for chickens

Howdy, I started my fodder a few months back. We had super high temperatures (over 112 for a week) that turned my fodder into a nasty under germinated fermented mess! I'm going to start mine up again (slowly) since the temperatures are below 100 again and my house is slightly below 80. At...

    Growing fodder for chickens

Howdy, from what I have read, animal feed should be used for sprouting. Organic and regular vegetable seeds have been treated for storage, mold, fungus, etc. This may be an organic treatment, but will cause harm to your animals because it was not intended for consumption, but was intended to...

I sent you my mold prevention ideas. It has been in the high 90's here in Loomis, CA off and on. I have been successful so far. I have had a seed or two break out with mold (sunflower and random grass seed before deploying the grapefruit seed spray). I removed the offender and about a 1-2"...

The barley will not sprout unless it comes with the hull OR it is the hulless variety. Most of what you buy in the grocery store has been hulled (hull removed).

Yes, or barley, or any seed that sprouts. I think groworganic.com makes a mix for chickens, I purchased it before. Hold on, let me get the link. Forage #1 (I didn't buy this one as it's new, but it looks great too) Forage #2 I think this is the one I purchased Have fun!

I usually add 3 cups of barley to 1/2 cup of BOSS in my mix, as the BOSS is way more expensive. I also don't like how dirty it is. Perhaps you have a better source than I did, mine requires a good deal of picking through so when I'm busy, I just don't bother and only sprout barley and wheat...

I have been watering my plants and trees with the waste water. I only run through once each watering. Same batch of water goes through all 7 trays, then I take it outside for the plants. I do not recycle the water further.

I have not tried the brown rice, does it require hulls or is it like wheat? I have some in the cupboard, I'd love to see! How FUN is this!

    Growing fodder for chickens

Unlikely that the chickens will give it time to grow. They love scratching up plants a bit too much. I would expect them to cheerfully tear it apart for fun unless you can fence it off and reduce how many seeds you sow. I hear they like the bottoms of the fodder more than the tops, but my...

Also, someone on this forum (thread) recommended calling the farm adviser in your county, which I thought was a great resource!

Well, let me give you a few places. Ok, funny that you ask about Mangels I have some seeds and I think I got them at Johnny's under the beet section. :) However, I have to give you my other favorite places for seeds so you can poke your head in a check it out for beets, etc. I just learned...
