So to be clear - my Morans started laying at 6 months, seemed to have a "light" molt shortly after, and have not layed since. Now it is November, shorter days etc. From what I am reading it is possible they will not lay again till Spring?
at 22 weeks. She is not laying that way anymore. In fact non e of the Morans are laying..... I am a bit confused at this point. The RI, the Easter Eggers all lay fine. Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it greatly.
I have had a larger number of hens than I would imagine seem "off" and pass later what appears to be the inside of the egg - no shell. They eat purina flock raiser, I give them grit and they free range. Should there not be a feed that has the proportion already in it of grit as a supplement? Is...
I have three Marans, one is a feather leg. 2 out of the three lay a copper colored egg. The Feather leg lays a brown variety.
They have been laying a month or so, but one of them seems to have a problem with the last step in her color. My question is not a
concern but a curiosity. Does this...
I have two March babies out of 8 that have yet to lay.
Today they were both in the coop while everyone else was enjoying sun outside, there was a little blood noted on the shavings. vents are clean, feathers are in tact, no rooster on premises.
I separated them both, put some electrolytes in...
I had a year old Easter Egger that looked just like that. I followed all the BYC post instructions, separating her, warm soaks, preparation H and gently manipulating it back into place... all this over a three day period. We kept her in the dark so she would be less likely to lay. She did not...
you are so right on - after they are "clicker" trained, I bridge from the click to calling "GIRLS......." and they all come running.
I like the idea of adding the target/hand signal.... good addition to keeping them safe and easing the "round up" for other family members too Thanks.

I am a dog trainer so early on I started "training" my chickens. I use a clicker and whatever fruit I might have, apple pieces, grapes etc.
They are a quick study! After a few random clicks and treats to make the connection, I start moving about a bit - (all this being done around their brooder...
So very interesting. When I am not home I keep them separated, oldsters in the coop, young ones in the run so the oldsters can lay. As soon as I return I let them free range again. They are starting to "bunch up" closer during the free range time without a chase. Last night, when I went to check...
I have heard that about RIR from some local farmers. I like the idea of breaking up the coop. We had built everything up to increase floor space in the 6x8 coop-they have an 8 foot perch wall to wall with a poop shelf plus a 4 rung step ladder mounted against the wall.
It feels like fish in a...
OK all - I have read prior posts and been so blessed by your experiences yet this introduction of 17 week old chicks to an existing 1.5 year old chickens is a challenge. The newbies have been in an X pen in the 6x8 chicken coop attached to an outdoor run 5x8 for three weeks, visible but...
Day 4 of a 2 week old Barred Rock appearing short of breath, using all muscles to breath. On medicated food on arrival. Small but healthy on arrival. All other babies remain healthy and are separated.
Day 1 of illness isolated and started electrolytes and Oxytetracycline - still eating...
