Thank you for the reply. So then it appears I may have a rooster, even though they were all supposed to be sexed hens. Haha oh well. I could use him. The one I have now is mean any ways. Pictures for comparison. They are a day or two old but they look the same as of Friday.

    *Buff Orpington Thread!*

I just got my first two buff chicks. Is it true that hens feather out first and quicker then males? And if by a week old if they don't have any feathers would it be a good bet they're a rooster?

The project is going great. I'm working right now but as soon as I get home I have new pictures that if everyone yesterday. An interesting note all the chicks in the organic feed group are at a minimum of 8-10 grams bigger then their same breed counterparts in the name brand feed group.

Haha that's exactly what my teacher says! I have no clue, and it's all of them that stay that still, not just those two.

    Buff Orpington chicks

Update with pictures of both buff Orpington chicks. An important note, I've noticed through the first week of age all of the chicks on organic feed weigh more then their same breed counterparts in the name brand feed group. The weight difference, if I recall, is atleast an 8 gram if not 10 gram...

That would be amazing if all ten eggs hatch. You'll have quite a bit to choose from.

The possible roo buff chick weighs 79.5 grams, was 72.3 grams yesterday. He/she still doesn't have any feathers growing in. The definite hen weighs 67.9 grams today, was 60.6 grams yesterday.

That stage is not far from me! The Silkies looked super weird during their transition. My definite hen buff looks like your second chick but has shoulder feathers and little tail feathers.

Hector will be very happy. Do you ever show the daddy roosters their children, and if so do they ever seem to know?

A big indicator I had for my silkies was the size of their feet and legs. Same with Australorps, I use to have them as well.
