I am pretty excited to know what she is now. We have enjoyed our ISA Brown's nearly daily LARGE eggs, but she is going on year three now so I know she'll be less reliable soon. Sounds like this new lady might fill that spot pretty well. Both are very sweet chicken personalities, too.
They do have cats but have never seen the cats bother the hens at all. In my own experience, the hens are too big for domestic cats. We're thinking it was a racoon, but the air-born threat is a good theory too. They've been extra careful, reworking their run and better securing at night, and...
Also, I had guessed Rhode Island because they were also selling those the same day. That would make sense. That one ended up in the wrong bin. Nothing else they had that day would look like her but that doesn't mean something didn't happen before they got to the store I guess
She doesn't look like my other New Hampshire hens. And I don't remember them having eyeliner or chipmunk stripes as babies either. I'll look for some old photos...
She is 18 weeks old and HUGE! bigger than my 2 year old Orpington! But doesn't know it-- she's quite timid of the other birds. Anyway, for a long time I wasn't sure if she really was a Delaware cuz she was so dark, but I'm pretty sure she is. Just poorly colored? Will some of the spots go away...
She was supposed to be a Specked Sussex but obviously she is not. She did have chipmunk stripes and eyeliner as a chick though. Do RIR have that? What about the black around her neck feathers? I've never had RIR before, just New Hampshire Reds (the hen to the right in the first picture). She is...
Thanks for the comments and support, everyone. Sorry, I should have updated sooner. They have since lost more birds in a similar way, so we do now know it's a predator of some sort. They are working on covering the run in hopes it doesn't keep happening. It's so very sad, as their teen daughter...
What kind of predator? It was so fast and no sign of anything. I'm worried about the rest of her flock. Her sweet teen daughter loves these chickens so much! I hope nothing else happens.
A year ago I gave a bullied chicken (Paris, a Salmon Faverolles) to a friend. Her smaller and younger flock also picked on Paris and they spent a year separating bullies and victims, etc. and giving Paris the best life they could. Today, Paris was found missing. All that was left were her...
I looked back through my notes and also for sale the day we bought these chicks were RIR. Does she look like she could have been a RIR that got put back in the wrong bin that day? She does look like photos online of RIR at 6 weeks. I didn't know RIR could be chipmunk-y chicks though
I could use a little guidance. I got these chicks and one (#1) was supposed to be a Speckled Sussex. As they grow, I am noticing that is not what she looks like-- she has yellow legs, and is a lighter and more even reddish color instead. Is she a Red Sussex or Brown Sussex or something? I don't...
Hi. I wanted to try some Black Australorps and never saw them for sale anywhere this year either, after usually seeing plenty of them. Very interesting. I ended up finding one "production blue" that is half black Australorp. And now kinda wondering if she is a he, anyway. Hopefully better luck...
