OK, thanks all. I guess I’m going to invest in some hardware cloth. I know there’s no guarantee, but do you reckon it’s relatively safe to leave them in their current enclosure during the day and just stick them in the garage at night? I’d hate to force them to stay in a small cage for the long...
Hey all, we’ve always only dealt with hawks and never had any ground predators. I’m looking for clues as to what kind of predator we are dealing with.
Lo and behold, this morning my one coop-sleeping chicken was pulled apart in the coop. The other chickens (all of whom sleep outside on a...
Absolutely go looking in trees, bushes, etc in the nearest maybe 20-50 meters, maybe more. We had a hawk attack and only one bird got taken, but the others were so hard to find due to embedding themselves deep in bushes and not responding to my calls. It took me walking around slowly and quietly...
Thanks, this helps. I was a little concerned about what looked like pointy feathers beginning to appear on the neck of the red chested one; is that not a certainty toward man-bird 🐓🐓?!?
We are about to buy two few-month-old birds - these are the pictures we have. Looking for pullets but I know these silkie types can be tricky, and you all were great at realizing the last two were cockerels!!
Thanks for any thoughts!
Thanks! Not the answer I wanted but I already had some suspicions 😞. We are ain’t allowed to keep roos so I will have to rehome, but I think I’ll wait another month just to be sure of the pea comb one.
Cross posting because I just realized I posted in the wrong forum! What do you think about these two? Sage - flat black comb. Flower - pinky red comb.
I especially will appreciate what characteristics led to your conclusion!
They are from a Cochin and splash silkie. 3-4 months (13-16 weeks old...
Would love help sexing these two birds that we got at 2-3 months old. Now they’re 3-4 months. I was told they’re satins, born from a splash silkie dad and Cochin mom. Bird with flat comb we are quite sure is a hen but the other one is really stumping us! Seems to have rooster qualities, but I...
For posterity’s sake I wanted to post a follow up here. This hen continued to decline, stools growing more watery, comb growing darker and more shriveled. She began to show signs of paralysis, no use of one leg, weak and droopy wings. At some point a few days after the above posts, I treated her...
Ooh good memory! That hen unfortunately died:(. I think that’s why I’m so worried about this one, as the other started with feather loss, gleet and blue comb. The other didn’t have all that white diarrhea though.
They do graze around our yard but in principle there’s nothing moldy in their food...
My spouse put out a bird feeder one day about a week and a half ago and our flock got under it and ate all the (many) dropped seeds. One of them (our 3 year old ISS brown) developed white liquify poops a few days later. She is now not as energetic, not eating as readily and refuses worms (though...
Quick update… She seems to have abandoned her eggs, her leg is getting a bit better but she seems to be losing all her feathers too :(. Hope it is just the fall molt and a twisted ankle… time will tell!
Thanks. She’s definitely behaving broodily! She does still get up for the usual half hour to do her business (poop, eat, drink), but limps through it. I’ll check out the vitamin B! She does seem better yesterday, so hopefully it’s just a silly sitting position she’s been in or a minor injury...
