Questions on Processing and Storing Chickens

That might work! I don't have a pet carrier. I could get one, but more importantly, he's so skittish and fast I'm concerned he's going to be too hard to get out of the carrier and deal with at any time during the day.

Questions on Processing and Storing Chickens

I'm getting ready to cull and process my first rooster, and I'm trying to figure out the timing of everything. This roo is really skittish and he has plenty of places to hide in the run, so I know I won't be able to pick him up until after the sun goes down. My question is - how much...

6 Week Barred Rock - pullet or cockerel?

Do you think this barred rock is a pullet or a cockerel? I was convinced it was a cockerel because of its coloring, and it developed a comb before the rest of the chicks. But, now the comb looks similar to the others, and it's about the same size, if not smaller. The last pic is of the pullet...

Only one hen survived predator attack

Sadly, we had an awful coyote attack that took out most of our 16-chicken flock. Only 2 remained, and then one died last night. We're now left with a single 10-week old Rhode Island Red. We're ordering more chicks, but is there anything I can do in the meantime to keep my surviving bird happy...

Coyote-Proofing a Run in the Desert

Yeah, this is going to be tricky -- soil moisture is completely non-existent in the desert. They started 3 feet from the run. There's like a 2-foot gap between the outer chainlink fence and the fence around the run. The first time they came, the coyote dug under the chainlink, then dug another...

Coyote-Proofing a Run in the Desert

Thanks all for your replies. We're going to get an electric fence and add hardwire cloth to the floor of the run. Plus, we're turning off the automatic chicken door and waiting until we get back from walking the dogs to let the chickens out of the coop. I'm really hoping that will keep our birds...

Coyote-Proofing a Run in the Desert

Hi Everyone, I’m in a bit of a quandary here as I can’t seem to keep coyotes out of our run. Our property has a chain-link perimeter fence and the run has its own wooden fence. As suggested, I dug down about a foot deep and attached wire mesh to secure the base of the run fence. In addition...

Breed and Sex of This 5-Week Chick?

We got a mystery chick with our McMurray order, and I can't figure out what this dark one could be. Any ideas on the breed or sex? It is by far the least friendly and most skittish of the bunch. Thanks for your input!
