I found a pvc piece at Home Depot that I use as a cover that prevents this. You could see if you can find one that could fit yours. I don’t have a photo handy but if you go to my coop page and scroll down there’s a picture. Good luck! It’s so frustrating when they don’t work as expected.
Agree that you need hardware cloth instead.
Where are you located? The metal siding will be very cold in the winter, especially given that it doesn't have plywood underneath. I strongly recommend putting plywood under any metal roofing, at the very least, otherwise you'll get condensation in...
Here's my latest coop write-up: https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/modular-secondary-coop.79499/.
This isn't a standard coop; it's designed to be a small multi-purpose structure that can be taken apart and moved around to serve as a pullet quarantine, a secure run extension, as covered...
It isn’t fastened with anything—it just sits on the end of the run (see second photo on page). There’s a sliding chicken door at the end of the run that opens up into the extension. Does that make sense?
I built this modular coop, which comes apart into four pieces, this spring to serve many functions:
(1) As a stand-alone small coop to quarantine new or sick birds or as a jail for bullies:
(2) As a run extension that creates more covered, secure space when we have to keep the birds locked...
I agree with the suggestion to lock up the bully hen in the nursery coop. I just did that for a few weeks after our bully tried to kill a pullet. I reintroduced her to the flock a few days ago and she’s totally fine with the pullets now. You could keep your bully locked up while you’re on vacation.
Thanks. I wasn't saying it was her because she appears to be starting to lay; I was just mentioning that for context. I think it's her because she's the most vocal and confident but am going to put a Ring camera into the coop tonight to try to figure out for sure. The first photo below (the one...
We have a 5 month old Speckled Sussex pullet who just started crowing briefly at 6:15am on the dot. We live in an urban area and this is going to be a problem if it continues. I think it's our pullet who is just about to start laying--her wattle has gotten noticeably redder over the last few...
I do think the ventilation requirement varies a lot by climate. It’s so dry where we are in Colorado that I think folks can get away with less than minimum ventilation pretty easily.
