    snake bite or bumblefoot?

Rosie's foot is all better! We treated her for 5 days. Each day we soaked the foot in water, then hydrogen peroxide, then put neosporin on it. We could see visible improvement by the day. The pics are from day 2. Thanks for your help! You can actually see one of the lacerations in this one:

Ok, here's my pics! What do you guys think? The first two are pics of chicks with short wings and no tails: And the rest are ones with long wings and tails:

    Sexing Buff Orpingtons

I'm wondering about this, too. Mine are 2 weeks & I have 4 with wing feathers that extend to the end of their bodies + tails, and 6 that don't have either. I've also heard that male BO's have a dark spot on their heads, and I have some with spots, but the spots are on both chicks with the...

will hens lay during the day

As long as they have access to the coop, they should still go in there to lay.

    help me help the mama!

Quote: Yup, I think you're right! But which one is the smart choice? They are all in w/the other hens... I see 3 options: 1) Just let them sort it out. 2) Isolate Rosie. 3) Isolate #2. Both are first time mamas, so we can't examine past experience as to who is the better protector...

    help me help the mama!

We had two broodies at once; gave them both hatching eggs on the same day...Rosie's eggs hatched first, and #2's hatched over the next two days. Rosie took care of #2's chicks until they all hatched, and then the two mamas took care of all the babies together. Then Rosie got a snake bite on...

    Hen won't leave nest box

Sounds broody to me! Mine sat for 2 or 3 weeks on nothing before we finally gave her hatching eggs. And she stayed sitting until they hatched!

What breed makes the best mother?

I've got two Buff Orps that are doing a top-notch job! Dunno if it's beginner's luck, but I don't have a single complaint. Their clutches hatched at the same time & they've been sharing mothering duties since the beginning.

will hens lay during the day

Mine only lay during the day! And it can be any time of day, but typically it's between 10-3.

My new momma hen just laid an egg

Is she still caring for her chicks? We had chicks under two broodies that hatched Mon-Wed & I'm wondering how the transition back to laying will go!

What do you think the best egg layers are??

I'd guess molting or starting to go broody! They do lay for years, but production slows as they age.
