Interested in composting & backyard orcharding.
First flock Spring 2019. 5 hens allowed in city limits for our lot size. Currently have a RIR (Sally Henny Penny), Brown Leghorn (Egg Shen), Black Sexlink (Talulah), Golden Sexlink (Peep Throat), and Silver Laced Wyandotte (Little Bitch). They stay in the run since we have lots of plants in our yard that we don't want them to eat or scratch up.
Coop (we call it "The Bock Box") is 4x6, run right now is about 6x8 on one side of the coop, plus the area below the coop. We plan to expand the run another 6x6 on the other side of the coop as well.
Our weather is moderate, with extremes just below freezing a couple of times a year and occasionally up to 104 a couple of times a year.
Drainage in our yard is terrible. Clay & serpentine soil, & we're pretty sure they graded over a natural runoff area when building the house as we found river rocks several feet down & a topographical map shows us right in the path of a nearby hill's runoff ravine.
Coop is right by our house for 2 reasons: 1) the area is completely surrounded by concrete so no worries about burrowing predators. 2) no need to trek across our seep of a yard to care for them during rainy season.
