I also had one die unexpectedly at about 12 days. Big healthy looking girl too. The brooder is a bit crowded but she wasn’t in a corner, just right in the middle sprawled out. She got a proper burial. Moving out to tractors this weekend.
I’m in southern middle TN, nights shouldn’t get below 60 anymore. Are these birds ready to be tractored? The only spots I don’t see full feathers are on their heads and under their wings. I figured that when they settle down at night they will have full coverage with their current condition.
You could go with a chicken tractor design. Meant to be moved daily to fresh grass, it’s open bottom, there are some that have a roost/coop built into the top for them to be enclosed at night. Mostly used for broilers but they can work for layers as well.
If you have Amazon prime you can get a pretty good deal on hardware cloth, I believe 48”x100’ 19 gauge 1/2” hardware cloth is about $140-150 and free shipping.
Thanks for the info. These birds are not egg-layers so they don’t need boxes, the general rule for broilers in a tractor is 2sqf per bird. The Saladin tractor calls for 75 broilers in 100 sqf space, I wouldn’t bunch them together this tight personally. I have posted on the correct forum as well...
