I'm looking for some light brown Leghorns or another breed/variety that resembles the wild-type red junglefowl. Looking for a cockerel or young roo and a few hens/pullets. I'm in Northern MD, willing to travel reasonable distances within the MD/PA areas.
Anyone going to the show this weekend? Has anyone ever been and can share their experiences? It's at the Frederick Fairgrounds, here is a link:

Also the APA and ABA state meets, if I recall correctly.
Are you sure on the sexes of the chicks? The same two parent birds can create a great deal of different colors/patterns, and they don't always (in fact, they rarely) correspond to the sexes of the chicks. I have four different down colors/patterns on a current batch of chicks from breeding a...
Not to resurrect an old thread, but I'd like to show just what good nutrition, age, and good care can do for hatchery quality birds. Here are some pictures of the same rooster in the above photos. @theuglychick @waddles99 @keesmom
Very nice IMO for cockerel of just 7 months. :)

I'm not looking to breed for APA shows or any such thing. The project is to see how the birds change throughout each generation. Even if I do make a mess of the lines, that's part of the experiment! :) Its more for fun than anything.
The goal of the project is to see how much improvement can be made from hatchery birds. I will of course outcross for hybrid vigor and a lower inbreeding coefficient.
I just raised 29 chicks (was 31, only lost two!) in a homemade wooden 4x4' brooder. I used one 24" feeder filled twice per day, and three 1-gallon waterers. I cleaned all equipment at least 1-2 times per day, which I feel was a very important thing to do with that many chickens in one brooder. I...
@aart and @Blooie, thinking now, I believe you two are correct when you say cheap usually isn't safe. I'm not necessarily looking for cheap so much as easy. Blooie, where did you get your cattle panels, I think I'll build an arch-like structure as well. It sounds affordable, quick, and safe...
Aart, I'm looking for a coop and run idea, but the run is most important and the biggest of my worries. I'm in Maryland, so we get snow and some heavy heat.
