new to the chicken world and look for some advice

My buff rooster is very aggressive but ive met buff roos that arent. And I dont know about white rocks. But for a family of 8 and 3 doz a week id say 20-30 hens. I also would suggest having the coop built before you get the chicks because it does take a while and they grow very quickly.

Oyster Shells - should it always be avaialble?

well i actually just talked about this with my vet and he said that it shouldnt be available all the time because if they decide that they like it they could over eat it and get too much calcium which can be very dangerous for their health. i personally dont ever offer oyster shell or any sort...

NEW CHICKS: Specific questions abt brooder, feeding and handing

for the first couple of days i have them on dog wee wee pads, just until they figure out what is food and what isn't. After that you can put them on pine shavings. The only thing is that the shavings will be kicked into the water and contaminate it so the best option would be to use poultry...

    chicks and roosters

I have two hens and one rooster now and i was thinking of getting four pullets. Im planning on having their brooder in the coop. My only concern is what will happen with the rooster when they are finally allowed to mingle with the existing flock. Would he try to mate with them when they are...

Hatching - what about the males?

Thanks! My rooster was sexed as a pullet but it turned out otherwise. I kept him but he is very aggressive and i do not think another rooster would be good for him or his huge ego haha

Hatching - what about the males?

Hello fellow flock owners! I just lost 3/5 of my hens to a fox and I still have my rooster. But, two hens is far too few to have with a rooster. The poor girls will be worn out from mating! I am trying to adopt some ex battery hens but if it doesn't work out I think I am going to hatch some eggs...

    fox attack

Believe it or not even after all of this, I am concerned about the fox! I don't really want to kill her because there are probably some fox pups waiting for their mother to come home with food or else they will die. I have already made sure the coop is completely predator proof now though. I do...

    fox attack

A bit over a week ago there was a fox that came around dusk just as my chickens were going in from free ranging. My rooster fought with him until I heard it happening and ran outside to scare him off. You would think that I would be smart enough to consistently lock all of my locks after that...

    fox attack

I was woken up at 5:30 am by my screaming rooster. I ran outside to find three of my girls, dead, with feathers everywhere. When I say that this is the most devastating thing to happen to me. My girls are family to me, I had such a close bond with them, especially those three actually. What was...

    Frost bite

My rooster got very bad frost bite last night. I am in new york and temperatures were around 8 degrees. I am working on fixing the coop to make it more winter appropriate but my question is how should I treat the frost bite. I brought him inside and am slowly warming the area with a luke warm...

Bloody Egg... INSIDE... No Rooster... Picture

Hens often lay odd eggs rooster or not. Blood spots can happen and are completely normal so it shouldn't be a problem but i would get a second opinion.

Is this ok for one more week?

I would suggest taking a couple of cardboard boxes and connecting them with tape. Cut holes in the sides and tape them at the holes as well to act like doors.
