Chickens are to live till 10 or older correct? I would think 5 or 6 is like 40 in human years. I don't know how long I expected them to live. I just didn't think it would only be till 6.
Hey, I'm hoping for some expert advise, or any random ideas would probably be helpful too.
I live in central Pa and have 5 or 6 year old hens. ( I can't remember what year I got them) I've lost many of my hens to foxes, mostly the flighty ones that can't stay put in the fence. Last winter I...
They are getting somewhat tamer. Momma Dukes is letting me get much closer to her. She spent 2 night in the coop with the other chickens. Last night she slept in her little hideout I built for her, but she's definitely starting to warm up a little to me. Don't get me wrong though she'll attack...
Yeah she just randomly shows up. It's not the 1st time I had a bird randomly show up. Last fall I came home to find a peacock in my yard. I left her in the fence with the chickens and she stuck around ever since.
As long as they stick around I'll keep them... momma too. There are 9 total. If they are roosters and become to mean or loud I might sell them or give them to a friend who has chickens and doesn't mind roosters.
The 1st picture is my coop, the 2nd picture shows the front door of the shed. That little yellow piece of siding on the front folds open and just inside there is where she takes her peeps at night. Thats where I stuck the two left behind peeps in that hole last night. The 3rd picture is where...
Turns out this girl laid her eggs right under my feet. Literally!
My coop is an old shed, and behind the shed was an opening that went underneath the shed. I closed it up with tin years ago. This evening I stayed up to watch and see where she takes the peeps. She took them behind the shed...
I have all their feed in the coop, and at the end of the day when they all go to bed I lock up the coop. I'd hate to keep the mother and her peeps locked up in the coop all day cause it get especially hot and the other like to lay their eggs in there. I could try and tempt her with treats in the...
Thanks for the breed info. What would another run and coop do? When she 1st showed up at my house she was in the yard. I opened the gate to my run and chased her in, she had free access to a HUGE coop and about 1/2 an acre of securely fenced in yard. At night she would fly up in the trees...
She just came back about an hour ago with all her peeps (maybe not all of them, I didn't go down to count them yet) I heard her clucking and looked out the window and saw her down there.
She's back in her hideout in the chicken pen for now. I'm going to leave her alone today in hopes that...
That makes sense. She can fly really well, and the only time I've ever gotten close to her before she had to protect her chicks was when she was eating in the coop I crept up behind her and shut the door before she got out, because she is so fast.
I see.
I built this nice little fox proof hideout for her, equipped with starter chick feed and water. I built in the fence where she was hanging out with her chicks. Before she had young ones she didn't sleep in the coop with the others, so I figured why would she now. She took her chicks...
I
She showed up one day and hung out for a few weeks. She would fly (really well) about 20 feet up in a tree at night to sleep. She is super fast. She disappeared 3 weeks ago, and today came back with 9 little peeps. Any idea of the breed?
My silly question is, if she has 9 peeps with...
