I read through a lot of these pages before posting and I think I have called them right (with one exception). I have a friend wanting to buy a couple of pullets from me tomorrow and I'd like to be sure. Mind helping me?
These are the ones I think are the pullets, agree?
My one doubt is this...
Yes, we've picked them up and the all-white ones are significantly lighter and less substantial than the (possible) Delawares.
It is good to know the Leghorns can be decent fryers if taken young.
Lesson learned. No buying "heritage breed" chickens from Joe Shmoe from some local Facebook...
They were all supposed to be raised for meat. As soon as I suspected Leghorns and googled them I read they're terrible meat birds, of course!
I suppose we'll just keep them a while longer until they at least have SOME meat on their bones and then harvest them. I'm really ticked off at the...
I bought 25 three-day olds from a local guy back in January. He told me they were all Delawares but only about half have the Delaware patterns.
Can you help me decipher what they are?
I really wanted the Delawares so I'm not happy I have only half of what I thought I had. Are they White...
Look at her this week! Almost completely covered with the starts of new feathers. Pretty miraculous in my opinion....I was sure we were going to lose her!
She's doing great! Her neck still looks nasty but we have her seperate from the rest of the flock and are spraying Vetricyn on the wound 2-3 times a day and keeping Neosporin on it. I noticed a yellowish crustiness today but it isn't pus-filled or putrid smelling so I'm hoping that's somewhat...
We've actually been planning on butchering two of the three roosters once we knew which ones were more aggressive. The one we believe to be in the middle of the pecking order is actually very friendly and we only want one. We don't have any room to keep another flock for another cockerel to look...
We actually have three cockerels (bought the whole flock from a neighbor and they're all the same age, born July 4th) and we believe it's the top-most rooster that's the likely culprit. The lowest one has all his tail feathers pecked out as well. We're pretty sure it's him....looks like his time...
She and another hen are new to an established flock. We know the two of them were getting picked on but didn't see anything more serious than the natural re-sorting of the pecking order. My boys had seen her get stuck between the fence and the little shelters we have for them while their coop is...
On the advice of another article I found I flushed the wound with warm water and a touch of Dawn dish soap then again with warm water and peroxide (which made for an unhappy hen, of course!). Dried her off a bit and put her in my bathtub on clean straw with a dish of food and water.
On closer...
My kids found one of our hens bleeding and barely moving this morning. She isn't actively bleeding but is in real bad shape. Is there anything I can do for her???
Thanks guys, now that you point them out, I don't know how I didn't see it myself!! We weren't sure if we were going to venture into meat chickens so soon (just moved cross-country and bought a house) but 3, possibly 4 roosters just made up my mind. ;)
The silver one we named Henry VIII and I'm...
