After doing some research, I think it was a make Cooper’s hawk or a Sharpie. They are both small enough to fit through the small opening I saw, and both have gray feathers on their backs and tail. I saw a gray bird struggling to get through the top of the netting, but thought it was a dove...
Today I went to snack the girls and saw what I thought was a grey bird struggling to get through the aviary netting. The girls were in the coop hiding and checked and only had seven of eight. I knew then that I had a dead chicken.
I checked the coop and found that a rail had become loose and a...
Well here he is! His crow has gone to one syllable to two syllables it is now a wretched three syllables! He really is cute and we’re hoping to keep him
Not sure I was clear here. Darn auto correct. I have the young flock away from the three older girls. They all roost together at night, but I want to keep the little ones in a smaller area, until they figure out the coop and going in and out on their own. They’re easy to catch that way...
What about separating him? So far I have the young bird separate from the big birds but everyone can see one another. Today he was chasing my lowest on the pecking order with scissor bake and I got mad at him and put him in with the big girls. Was he trying to protect them from the other birds...
Thank you! I’m going to give him a try. We don’t have any children around anymore, they’re all grown, so it’s just my husband I’ll need to protect! If he doesn’t work out, I’ll either try Craigslist, or just Hubby take care of him.
I do have three older hens, who may thump him, but I worry he will hurt them, when he’s bigger than they are. One is pretty fragile and has a tough time getting around. She is seven. Another one is nine.
Thank you everyone! I’m such a baby, that I don’t know if I could eat him! I’m going to give him a try.
I’ve been reading about training roo, but the articles are so contradictory, it makes your head spin! Hold them, don’t hold them! Use your foot to push them away, don’t use your foot...
After the last two roosters, I said no more but the latest flock of eight, they snuck one in. No one I know wants him, of course! Do I wait, or do it now? Do I give him a try at not being a nasty, attacking, beast?
After the last two roosters, I said no more but the latest flick of eight, they snuck one in. No one I know wants him, of course! Do I wait, or do it now? Do I give him a try at not being a nasty, stacking beast?
Update. Most definitely a roo. I’m frustrated because I wasn’t allowed to pick out the chicks, because the farm wasn’t letting anyone in, so I didn’t even really look at them until I got home. They hatched that day and when I did a wing test, his looked different. I think they purposely gave...
Not really because the coop is off the ground and it’s a pole barn type with the four posts in the ground. I was more worried something would climb in and get into the coop but I don’t think anything would go in a hole where groundhogs are living they’re pretty aggressive
