Adding one 6 week old pullet to existing flock of 3 three year old hens

Hi, I live in the suburbs and we are only allowed 5 chickens. Two died last year, and 6 weeks ago i got two new chicks to replace. This morning I went to the brooder and the small one was dead! So now I have only one 6 week old Novagen pullet to add to the flock of three old ladies (in pecking...

    Tail down

One of our chickens recently started holding her tail down instead of up. Probably it has been at least a week. I read some of the threads here and was wondering about her being egg bound. Not every chicken in our flock of five lays every day, but we only have three brown egg layers and got...

    Coop on pavers?

So, maybe this is a weird first picture to post, but I was suddenly required to move the coop as we have some guys coming to replace the deck starting tomorrow and I didn’t want to take a chance of anything falling on the coop while they are working. I had put a lot of time into coop design and...

    Coop Run Sand

The sand I’ve been using in mine is called river sand. It’s worked great through the last ten months in rainy Oregon. I buy it at a local landscape supply business for a few bucks per five gallon bucket.

    Coop on pavers?

Just wanted to provide a quick update. The coop has been on pavers since August, and I’m using sand as the material on the run floor over the pavers and inside the house minus the nesting box (straw). The girls free range all day outside in our suburban fenced backyard (meaning on rainy days...

    Coop on pavers?

I measured the actual difference in slope and apparently I am terrible at eyeballing. It’s only a 3/8” difference in elevation over 10-11’. My dad thinks it should be okay as long as I make the horizontals and verticals square with each other and check frequently (he builds a lot of things). But...

    Coop on pavers?

Thanks yes my design is similar to the Palace coop so the coop will be off the ground, just the run is on the pavers. Hard for me to remember to differentiate sometimes...

How level does the gound need to be?

OK, will figure out how to raise it then to make it level. Raising it off the ground entirely will just compound my “too small” problems because I only have 7 feet of overhead to work with because of the deck.

How level does the gound need to be?

Just adding on to this, I have about a two inch elevation difference over span of 10 feet. The bubble in the level is within the lines (just barely) but not centered. But, is this level enough for a chicken coop and run? I can shim the low end up if needed but would rather not make any openings...

    Coop on pavers?

Thanks for thinking that through for me. That is what I was thinking but wanted to run it by someone else too.

    Coop on pavers?

OK, gonna try to resuscitate this thread because it has all the background info for this question. Coop/run will be on pavers, for five chickens... has to be 20 ft from neighboring residences etc. I had been proposed the idea that putting down hardboard first would protect the pavers from...

    Disinfecting a used coop

Thanks so much everyone! @DobieLover you are spot on, the chicks are definitely too big for their brooder now. I will look into Oxine, but if I can’t get it today will probably do bleach to start. We are going to get the used coop this morning so I will ask if there have ever been chickens in it...

    Disinfecting a used coop

I am set to start building a coop today, but my chickens are getting so big that we are planning to get a used coop to use as a temporary setup so they can spend more time outside. Hopefully this will also be a chicken tractor later. I am planning to scrub the whole used coop with bleach...

Constructive feedback on coop/run design idea

Well, looks like that’s the feedback I am going to get! Thanks again @aart for taking the time and I am going to hope that by “a few” you mean 5 and go for it! (Since it does fit those minimums of 4 sq ft per chicken in the coop and 10 ft per chicken in the run, and they will get some...

Constructive feedback on coop/run design idea

Argh, I meant to say this is for 5 chickens. Okay, that is good to consider - if I can't figure out how to seal the window in the roof I will look into the polycarbonate roof panels. We do get a lot of rain here so that is an important consideration.
