My flock has since grown to 25 girls - Now I have a 10' x10' shed with 8ft walls, raised about 4" off the ground. The only treated wood is what touches the ground. I also got a linoleum floor remnant from a local flooring company and it was my best upgrade this time around! I put sand and bedding right on it for the perfect mix!

My roost is all one height all the way around so there is no issue with a pecking order hierarchy. I have nearly 20' of roost and they all snuggle up on about 10 of it. This time around my run is about 18'x10' and is more than enough room! I do have 10' tall sides and some old tree branches in there for them to roost on.

I also dug down 12" under the entire thing, placed chicken wire down and wired it to the walls of my run to predator proof it. My walls are a 10'x10' metal horse stall, wrapped in chicken wire, including over the top for climbing predators. I allow the girls to free-range still, but some of them prefer the run with the tree limbs over free-ranging.

I believe that if you are going to build a coop from nothing, make it easiest for you to take care of! My main concerns with my second coop were accessibility for myself and predator proof for my girls. They are very happy and have plenty of space.

Thanks for this. I am struggling with building the thing now. It's a big project for little ol' me in this heat. There is just SO MUCH info out there and everyone has an opinion that they are certain is absolute.
