Just be aware that if you find them for sale, to make sure to look at lots of pictures. The varieties in the US, especially Silvers, have often been crossbred with other crested breeds, like Polish, and they don't conform to the Standard. Since you came here from my broody post, you can see that she and two of my Silver roosters obviously had Polish blood in them.

My Silver roosters were also twice the size of my Gold and Chamois roosters. It's up to you whether you want Polish blood in your line; my Gold and Chamois aren't fully mature yet, but the Silvers were definitely stronger, more aware of predators, and hardier from my observations so far. Although, the Gold and Chamois are more friendly and allow me to handle them better.

I've heard that Cackle Hatchery's Spitzhaubens aren't bad. That's probably your best bet right now. Unfortunately I'm finding that the eggs I hatched from eBay have a big problem for living in the South, high susceptibility to fowlpox, with dry turning into wet at the drop of a hat.

I'm not sure that bloodline has ever come into contact with the virus based on how badly they're reacting, so my guess is that line is the one that came from Canada and not from Greenfire down in Florida; as my Greenfire line, nor my other breeds, from Texas and New Mexico, have ever shown more than a spot or two.

Oh, I hate fowlpox. Had it last year. All my flock had the dry version, except one, which we had to cull, becuase it got very bad.

@heatherrhodus1425 Carla Allen, one of the top breeders, is either in East Texas or near Houston. I'll bet if you find any out your way, they're from her line or P. Allen Smith's line (AFAIK Smith only does Silvers, Carla had blue at one time, but IDK about Gold or Chamois). Carla is the moderator of the FB group.

I've only ordered through David grote for my Icelandic . that's Y I wanted to ask on here. I order from from tractor supply , Hoover hatchery. They came in and killed my whole flock id rather hatch out on my own from a reputable source like world known David grote . I even called and confirmed his farm was approved through the apa.

Heather, what do you mean they came in and killed your whole flock? For what disease?
APA membership is just that, a paid membership. It doesn't necessarily mean someones birds are safe. What you want is an NPIP number and the endorsement for PT, plus AI and MG if they have them.

If you order online, TSC birds come from Hoover's, but if you buy in store, TSC chicks come from many sources. The ones here out my way come from Privett in New Mexico.

Oh wow! But honestly, I don’t think a Spitzhauben is a Spitzhauben without the spangling.
