She is a Sheltie and the best dog I've ever had. She was the pick of the litter from a legendary sire, and the only reason the show breeder let her go to my agility home was because they thought she was going to be too big to show. She is a grey faced veteran now, 11 years old, but still running agility and winning.

Wow! She must be very special. What’s her name?
What tips would you give someone who was interested in beginning Agility with an Akita?

An Akita in agility? Oof. They are beautiful dogs and I know people who love them, but they are not a good choice for agility because they are so independent. Agility is a team sport and you need a dog that wants to work with you and Akitas were bred to guard without human direction.

If your Akita is exceptionally biddable, you can give it a try. There was at least one Akita in the US who qualified to go to the AKC Agility Invitational. I know people with Shibas and Jindos who have made it work, and they have similar temperaments.

Thank you for the reply. :) My mother in her time raised, bred, and showed Akita’s, and she knows of a breeder who had succeful Agility Akita’s. Stardust Akita’s if your interested. There can be succeful ones, but they are few and far between.

I was just curious on a frequent agility shower’s opinion. :D

Well, I help with our club's agility classes and all the Akita owners gave up after a bit. The dogs just didn't want to do it, though they did well in obedience and rally. My suggestion would be to get a small, even undersized Akita. The big ones are just not built for jumping and agility is like 80% jumping.
