BackYard Chickens - Learn How to Raise Chickens

I’m so sorry your chicken is sick. I never got a clear diagnosis for mine, but she’s doing better and I can share what I tried.

I suspected reproductive issues, so I took her to a vet who implants Deslorelin. It was roughly $280 and took several phone calls to find a vet who does this for chickens.

I also provided liver support by sprinkling a little of the human supplement “Liver Support” by Seeking Health in her food. You can look up the ingredients and buy them separately. I use the website Poultry DMV to learn about the potential benefits of specific supplements for sick chickens.

If the abdomen is swollen? Look into ascites. There are tutorials on YouTube; watched a few before attempting to drain without a vet.

If you don’t already have it, get “The Chicken Health Handbook” by Gail Damerow. It’s chock-full of excellent information, but I typically turn to the chapter about diagnosing illnesses and the index of symptoms and treatments. (Note: If the book says “no treatment available,” I can sometimes find ideas here or on other sites.) I’ll attach pictures of the poop pages, (some) reproductive issues, and ascites.

If you aren’t already, keep her isolated from the flock until she’s feeling better. Give drops of NutriDrench in a syringe or soaked into bread. Scrambled eggs or plain yogurt sometimes spark an appetite if a chicken isn’t eating. Keep her hydrated, even if you have to carefully syringe fluid. Vinegar and electrolytes are sometimes good to try in water.

I wish they could just tell us what hurts and what’s wrong! I hope this helps you figure out a next step. All the best. 💛
