BackYard Chickens - Learn How to Raise Chickens

Went okay - 11 of 30 hatched on day 25. 1 died in shell without pipping, 4 died after pipping. 1 of the 11 has splay leg. I attribute all of this to 1) eggs getting lost in the mail during cold weather, thanks USPS and 2) low temperature issues in incubator. Everybody has to start somewhere!

Made the tough but humane choice to euthanize our splay leg chick last night. We were able to succesfully correct one of his two legs using the shot glass method, but his other leg seemed to actually dislocate from his hip joint. I then noticed that unlike all 10 other chicks, his wing feathers had not started to come in. I suspect this was due to him not feeding properly, or otherwise being stunted from the jump.

Man these babies do not keep for long! Pics taken at 1 week old. Also 2-3 of the chicks that we thought were Rosettas are turning gray/silver - very lovely. I am suspecting that we have some Jumbos in the mix.
