  • Meanwhile 1 hen is sat on 7 eggs which may hatch in 2 weeks. She spent the whole morning of day 5 off the eggs but has otherwise nested well so I’ll candle in a couple of days but I expect a few will be viable.

Candled day 9. Bit light so limited evidence but definitely some showing growth. Didn’t identify any movement yet, but some good air sacs. Here’s hoping for 2 or 3 to hatch.
Currently have one rooster (1 year old) who I have separated from my 11 hens due to a couple becoming bare backed. He’s a softy and the hens often bully him. One is a fan of his and she sneaks in for cuddles every couple of nights. Not sure what to do with him longer term.

He’s found his volume button and is now crowing louder every morning from the early hours…

So this one has taken to chest bumping their fellow welsummer brothers … so despite the nice pale comb, I suspect a boy!

I’ve now seen one of the buff orps doing the same! Argh hopefully not 4 boys out of 6!

2 weeks old. The welsummers and light Sussex growing rapidly and the others not far behind. Some short flights already taking place. Another trip outside yesterday but raining today so indoors.

1 week (7-9 days old) first trip outside with mama hen. Two aunty hens came close and have learned not to!

4-6 days old. The chicks all have tail feathers and are sprouting wings except the Buff Orpington’s who have no tail feathers yet. The yellow BO has grown bigger and stands taller and louder. Maybe a Roo. The gingery spotty BO is squatter and quieter, hopefully a pullet.
