Little Giant 3 Gallon Waterer With Metal Handle

This fountain utilizes the twist-lock style of connection which creates a sure-grip environment...
Pros: Fairly cheap
Cons: Algae and bacteria factory
Cheap waterer that will work. Drawbacks are that it is an Algae and bacteria factory. It also attracts mosquitos, which lay their eggs and produces a mosquito factory, too!
Needs to be cleaned very regularly and it's time consuming.
Other than that, it's a waterer that will get the job done.

Pros: Cheap / low dollar
Cons: Leaks, water doesn't flow
I would spend the extra money for a better waterer.

The water sometimes doesn't flow freely. You end up having to tip the waterer every couple days or so to refill the water basin at the bottom. If you don't tighten the water tray properly, you will end up with 3 gallons of water either in the coop or all over your feet.
Pros: won't rust
Cons: the design is too heavy for very cheap hardware provided
Even without adding water to this, we could not use it because there were little fastner pieces missing. We used some things we had around garage. The water makes it very heavy and the metal rod broke right away. The water doesn't come out well, or we could have used it on the ground. But the reason we bought it was to prevent them from getting into the base.

Pros: Can hang to keep coop litter out
Cons: Bottom has fallen off several times
Like being able to hang the waterer and it's helpful to be able to easily see the level of water in the tank. The problem we've had with this is that several times the bottom has fallen off right after filling, dumping water everywhere. Also, it's way too heavy (for me anyway) to put 3 gallons in it and then try to hang up again so we just put in about 1-1/2 gallons and then keep our fingers crossed that the bottom doesn't fall out while trying to re-hang it.

Pros: Metal handle that looks like it's made for hanging
Cons: Mine would not fill the trough
I contacted the company through their web site and they are working with me. They are sending a new one and a 'call tag' to send the old one back.
I bought this one because I like to hang the food and water and this one's metal handle appears made for hanging.
The problem I've had with mine is even though I was careful to line the outflow up properly it would not refill the trough after the chickens drank it. The trough would be dry and the reservoir would be full!!!!:(
I could jostle it and make it fill. This repeated several times.
A potential problem but one I haven't had is that the twist connection could allow the bottom to come off and lose all the water. It's just not very secure that way.
Not a problem but I'd really like a 2 gallon size waterer made for hanging. 3 gallons is just a little heavy for me. I did try filling it with only about 2 gallons instead of 3 and then it just wouldn't hold the water and allowed it all to spill out. :p
I let you know how the replacement does.

Me again. I have received the replacement unit from the company. :) But it's been cold enough that I won't use it till the weather warms as I'm using my 3 gallon warming waterer from Premier to keep the water from freezing.
I am appreciative the company has been responsive to my needs. I am upgrading my star rating for this now. But I would suggest anyone beware of any that might be of the more defective design.
Pros: Works fine if properly used
Cons: Must be level
I have several of these waterers. For the most part, they work well. They work best if you hang them because it is easier to keep them clean and level if they are hung. I put a harness or bolt snap on a chain and slung the chain over the rafters. You must make sure you get the snap is in the middle of the handle because if the waterer hangs unevenly, it will leak. If you set the waterer on the ground, it must be level, or it will leak. One waterer I purchased leaked no matter what I did with it, so I just quit using that one. I never did figure out what the problem was with that one.

Pros: None
Cons: Does not Work, Leaks, Horrible
It does not work. Sometimes it dumps all 3 gallons all over the coop. Other times it will not allow water out so my chickens got dehydrated. It is really bad quality and frustrating.

Pros: Is good for ducklings and chicks
Cons: Sometimes Adult Ducks don't want drink in it
The ducklings and chicks like this but the adult ducks, don't pay attention
Pros: Holds a lot of water
Cons: tricky connection
We have had the Little Giant for a short time but I like it. Its large capacity assures me that the ladies wont run out of water during the day. (A big concern with our "starter" watering container) I also like the fact that it can easily be hung off the ground since the ladies are famous for kicking ground material into everything.

My only initial concern was the connection of the top to bottom. It seemed a bit tricky to get everything aligned but after practicing several times before actually adding water it was no problem. I also like that the top, when inverted to fill, sits nicely on a flat surface. (I didn't notice that feature when I purchased the waterer but was VERY glad to discover it.

Pros: None
Cons: Everything
Just an aggravating thing to work with. Leaked. Tray very shallow. Tray had to be almost empty before more water would release. "Open" and "Close" arrows on bottom of tray are opposite of what they appear to be. Finally gave up on it and threw it out.

Pros: Slightly cheaper than rivals
Cons: Leaks, flimsy bottom warps causing more leaks, breaks
We bought six of these because they were about five dollars cheaper than the 3.5 gal waterers we had been using. There are several design flaws.

1) The top will turn and lock two ways instead of the usual one direction. The problem is that only one way is "open" and lets water out. You need to be careful you turn it the correct way or your birds will have a full waterer, but none in the base to drink.

2) The top tabs holding the "metal handle" they are so proud of break very easily and you are then left with no handle which makes moving them after filling very hard.

3) The bottoms are flimsy and don't seal well. With time they warp in the sun which causes them to leak even worse.

Most of them were out of service within 6 months, I think a couple lasted a year. We still have some of the Harris Farms 3.5 gallon waterers we got before then in service.

Pros: None
Cons: Too big to turn rightside up after filling when it is full, messy
Hate this thing. Agreed with NJ farmer on all points. Get the one with the lid on top that comes off, then no lifting and tipping upside down in the winter and killing your back and freezing your hands.

Pros: None
Cons: Hard to fill, bottom lid falls off
This waterer is junk. It is very difficult to fill, you have to twist the lid onto the top part and flip it over, water usually spills everywhere. The lid does not lock onto the top part. Many times I had the lid fall off while walking with it and dump water everywhere after filling it at the spigot.

DO NOT BUY THIS
Pros: not much
Cons: Very hard to fill
We bought this when our water started freezing inside our coop. It was the only one we could find. I thought it was a good deal, until my husband complained every time he had to fill it. You have to turn it upside down, when it is 10 degrees outside, you hate to spill water on your gloves, pants, etc. He used it for two winters. It spent the last winter in the coop "loft"!! Not worth the dollars to use it! You can make your own heated waterer for less money that is easier to use!! This review is for the heated version of the LG 3 Gallon Waterer!!

Pros: I like being able to walk by it and see the water level
Cons: clear cover lets the sun turn the water green
I use this in the spring thru fall.Easy to fill but must be set on level ground or it will tip when filling. We hang it outside which work well for us.Seems to be doing well sitting in the sun for 3 years. In the winter I don't keep water in it and instaed use a metal unit inside with a heater.
