    Chickens in nature

    Ah, that makes sense.

How did your flock annoy you today?

This was actually last week, but the chicken I was certain to be my first to lay wasn't laying. She's a big calico princess and her comb and wattles got big and she was squatting. But others started laying and she still wasn't. Then one day last week I heard a ruckus in the shelves at the back...

    Chickens in nature

I have to admit, that surprises me. So I take it these guy will live in a coop?

    metal shed to coop

That sounds good. The only thing I'd consider is maybe sawing through the wal up by the roof to add some vents.

    metal shed to coop

Would you be able to place it in shade - say under a tree? My coop has a metal roof, which can get hot, but it's under trees. Also, would you be able to cut more ventilation opens up along the top, and then attach some hardware cloth over them? I seriously considered one of those sheds myself...

    Compiled Questions (Ask Away) XD

Those are pretty, but I don’t want bantams. I’m looking at some different full-sized games.

That's what I want - alert enough to stay away from aggressors.

    Starting my resilience flock.

There is someone in the area who has them, I’m just not sure if he will have the available when I’m ready.

    Starting my resilience flock.

We have every last one of those predators as well. I’ve only been free-ranging for about 6 weeks, but so far so good. Gives me hope that when I get my game/leghorn mix’s they’ll survive being out full-time.

    Chicken Math Got Me Bad....

Oh no! The ones I ordered got here the day after they hatched, and I live in the middle of nowhere. The post office guy sounded excited when he called to say they were in.

    Starting my resilience flock.

Very exciting! They all have good camouflage colors, and that rooster is gorgeous. I'm in the process of building a little shelter in the woods to start a free range flock in the spring, figuring they'll mostly be game/leghorn mixes. I'm putting them some distance from my coop chickens although...

Are Chickens Ever Ostracized for Being Different?

My EE doesn't have a crest, but the OE has a small one. Mixed with legbar, I'm told.

Are Chickens Ever Ostracized for Being Different?

I have only one cream legbar and she gets along fine with the others. No one seems to notice her bouffant. There is also no issue with the Wyandotte who has a bad crossbeak. My flock of 13 has 13 different breeds and they are all happy with each other as far as I can tell.

Yeah, it's hard to find new posts about chickens with all the extraneous stuff. I'm here to learn and get support in my chicken-keeping.

No need to apologize. I'm just a little confused - I thought everyone here on BYC either had or wanted chickens. Ya know, 'cause it's a chicken site.

Oh! Well let me rephrase - what sort of chickens are you planning to get and where are you in the process?

Fresh perspective on camouflage for free-ranging chickens

I never wanted yellow flowers in my yard because they are a warm color and it's already hot enough here. Then I married my color-blind husband. Now I put in as many yellows blues and purples as possible for him. Fortunately there are a lot of native plants in those colors to choose from.
