Chicken Tractor on its way...
I live in Western NY, and I'm designing for 4-5 chickens even though I have picked up 6 from a local feed store. The coop is 5'X3.5'. The run is approximately 12'X5'. I have plenty of land so I'm really hoping that everyone is correct in how often I will have to...
Tiffany,
I'm sorry that you're having problems with the town. Let me know what zoning you're in. You can find this possibly in your taxes, but you definitely can find it on the towns map. I'll send you a PM so you I can help you further. Remember that the code is what matters, never what...
OK, I'm guessing the latter. I have had hens for several years. My latest groups of chickens are a wide assortment of types and ages. I have a chicken that was thought to be a golden comet. The bird is about 8months old. It has gotten very big. I lot bigger than the other chickens. Up...
I just wanted to point out that the $500,000 exemption is an amendment that was attached only to the Senate version of the bill that passed. The bill passed in the House does not have that. That is one of the main differences that the two parts of Congress need to work out. Big Ag does not...

Dawn,
You need everything to the town to be from your parents if it's their home. Or you at the least need a letter from them letting the town know you are representing them.

I don't have a clue. Best I can determine, the CDC does not either. I actually mentioned this in a previous post. You are exactly right that the USDA handles meat and poultry while this bill is FDA. One of the requirements of this bill is that a study to answer this question be...
...effect than this current "Food Safety" bill.
Leading Causes of Death
(Data are for the U.S.)
Number of deaths for leading causes of death
* Heart disease: 616,067
* Cancer: 562,875
* Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 135,952
* Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 127,924...
This is a very interesting thread. With every bill there are going to be some apparent good and bad aspects. The biggest problems with the current bill is the unknowns. It's sort of like Pelosi's "we need to vote it into law to see what's in it." Food safety is important. I don't think...
noodleroo is totally correct. It's a bill that passed the Senate, but is different from the bill that passed in the House. Big Ag does not want what passed in the Senate to become law, so it's VERY unlikely that anything will be passed too soon.
poltroon,
As long as the Tester amendment is in the final bill is wouldn't affect the garden of someone that sells at a farmers market, but right now Big Ag is looking to kill the current bill and try to get the amendment removed. If the amendment doesn't stand the interpretation will be...
The law uses the term "food producer" I believe. This language will be interpreted by the current FDA. The current version in the Senate has an amendment which excludes food producers making under $500,000/yr. Before the news broke about the constitutionality of the Senate version, the news...
Bill passed in the Senate, but with the $500,000 amendment with it. House will now have to pass the same bill. They passed a similar version in the past.
I've read up on this the last few days, and of course contacted both my senators. Buildingmyark is correct. The language is very broad and the real effect of the law will not be known until the bill is passed and the current FDA head decides (or is told by big corporate agriculture) what it...
Feel free to PM me. It will as you know vary by town. There was an article done in the Democrat and Chronicle (area paper) that had a discussion on it. It was about 1-2 years ago though. Try searching their website.
I'm surprised S.510 "Food Safety Modernization Act" hasn't gotten a lot more press. It's potentially as significant as NAAS. Currently it has an amendment on it makes it apply only to facilities over $500,000. Please call your senators. This like the health care bill is a "vote for it and...
I was just about to ask the same question... I'm at ~25 weeks and nothing. I was going to ask if I should expect them to lay at all until Spring seeing how short the days are getting. There's no sign of them looking to lay yet either. I've never had chickens go past 22 weeks. I have to say...
I think the problem with the idea, and the reasoning there's not much talk here from you post, is that it's so local. The funding would be relatively large for the number of people in each area. The only place I could possibly see funding going toward an effort that would affect significant...
I have been following this some on the radio and TV. I haven't heard one person against it. They should win in the end. I'd hate to be the one person who complained. They probably are a little scared to complain now. I know one radio station that will drag that person's name through the mud...
